Does anyone have recommendations or advice on how to get back into Kings of War with Salamanders? I haven't played since 1st edition but lately a lot of locals are playing KoW and I want to have an army to play with. I would be starting from scratch.
Kings of War looks like a lot of fun! Sadly there hasn't been much coverage of the game on this site or on youtube to my knowledge but in reading through the rules it seems the movement phase was always a very simplified version of the old WHF phase. Naturally starting out any army, I would go with what miniatures you think are the coolest looking. Will this help you always win your battles? No, but you will enjoy putting them together, and if the game rules every change you won't be stuck with a bunch of miniatures you hate. What companies were you thinking of purchasing from? GW? Mantic? Maybe some 3D printed stuff, like what you can find off etsy? If I were to be starting a Lizardmen/Saurian Ancients/Salamanders army from scratch, I would look into the Lost Kingdom Miniatures lizardmen, they have some beautiful stuff.
Hey there! Good to see people interested in Kings of War! Salamanders are pretty solid right now. There was an update book (Clash of Kings 2022) that came out recently and wow did we get buffs! I'll post a friend's list that is doing well right now... Horde of Primes with Chalice of Wrath 2 hordes of Tyrants (1 with Striding Boots, 1 with potion of the caterpillar) 3 regiments of scorchwings 1 horde of scorchwings with staying stone 1 regiment of unblooded with healing brew Rakawas the pale rider Greater Fire Elemental 2 rhinosaur battle captains (with with inspiring talisman) 1 skylord with trickster's wand 2300 points KoW is figure agnostic so you can use whatever you like as long as the opponent understands what is what Primes can be represented by basic saurus warriors, doesn't matter if you made them with spears or not Unblooded are basically the same thing Tyrants are kroxigors Scorchwings are pteradons/ripperdactyls Rakawas is basically a carnosaur on a 75mm base. skylord is a pteradon rider rhinosaur battle captains are saurus on big mounts that go on 50mm bases GFE is on a 75mm Basically the fliers move around harassing things and shooting chaff, backing up when need be while still shooting. They are SO good. Primes go in the center flanked by Tyrants that like to hide in the woods as their defense isn't that great. This game allows you to charge into a combat with an ally is you are behind them but are tall enough to see the enemy (primes up front, Rakawas and GFE combo with primes = profit) Edit: Easyarmy.com is where you can build army lists. There is a free version but the paid version is only $2 US a month, it's worth it. Sometimes it logs you out after you click the "remember me" button however. I'll be happy to help however I can!
Can second that, EasyArmy is a great way to get your hands on the army lists free of charge, and with Mantic releasing the rules as a free PDF, you can easily get started in KoW with minimal expense.
