In Oz we had two gentlemen who commented on sport on radio Triple J, who went by the names H.G. Nelson and 'Rampaging' Roy Slaven. They used to do the commentary for the Rugby League State of Origin games between New South Wales and Queensland. I used to like turning the sound off on the TV and listen to their commentary of the game on radio while watching. Always hilarious. They would refer to each player by their nickname. There was a player for Queensland named Gary Larson. He was always referred to as "The Far Side".
