This thread has been created for us to share our Top Ten favourites across a series various movie and other media categories. Each week (or semi-weekly) I'll post a new topic/genre for us to work through.

The point of this thread is to share personal favourites. Meaning your goal is to share your subjective list of your favourites, rather than what you feel might be objectively (or collectively considered to be) the best.

    General Guidelines:
    • the objective here is to share and not to debate (if someone posts a movie/show/game/etc. that you hate... let it be). There are plenty of other threads for debate. Don't try to change their minds or demean their selections.
    • lists should be subjective... i.e. personal favorites
    • aim for a top ten, but if you don't have a complete list of ten for a particular category, that is okay. List as many as you can. On the flip side, you can include a few honorable mentions if you wish to.
    • feel free to write a short (or long) description on why you chose the entries on your list... or just post a straight list (the choice is up to you)
    • for clarity and general organization, try to post your list before we move onto the next topic (usually within a week)
    • if possible, try provide an ordered list, ranked 1 through 10

To start us off, we'll work through a series of movie genres. If people are interested in the thread, I'll post different categories across other media/topics once we work through the genre lists. Each week, I'll post the topic and specific guidelines for that week's list. I'll update an active hyperlinked index on this first post so that you can easily find each weekly topic for reference.

    Topic #1 - Top Ten Action/Adventure movies.

Genres will always have a bit of wiggle room. Many movies will fall into multiple genres. You can google the genre of a movie as a quick guide (it is okay to deviate from this if you feel the movie belongs in a different genre). This is what I did for the most part, and then slotted the movie into the genre that felt best for me. Use your best judgment and a remember that is your subjective list. The only hard fast rule is that if you list a movie under one genre, don't list that movie under a different genre in a future weeks list. For example, if you put Rocky in your Action list, don't also list it in your Drama list a few weeks down the line. Choose the genre for the movie that feels right for you.

You can condense a movie series into one single selection if you want to (i.e. Rocky series or Rocky I-IV, etc) or choose a specific movie out of a series (i.e. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade ) as you see fit. It's your choice for each of your entries.

To get us started, I'll post my top ten. For now, I'll just post the straight list, which I might expand upon later.

    1. Braveheart
    2. Gladiator
    3. The Dark Knight
    4. Rocky (III-IV)
    5. 300
    6. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
    7. 13th Warrior
    8. First Blood
    9. Total Recall (1990)
    10. The Rock
Honourable mentions: National Treasure, The Mummy

Interesting stuff, I think I might give it a try.

One question up front: Movie genre as classified by IMDB?
(Movies can have multiple genres, I think this will not be a problem)

    Wow.

I love the thread @NIGHTBRINGER but I think I'll have to work it over.

For me, clear winner at #1 is The Matrix (number 1, I'm still trying to pretend that all the rest never happened as they are all dumpster fires for me)

I'll have to work out the rest.

    Gladiator is definitely in there.

Okay, I think it's as follows:

    1. Matrix (only the first movie and burn the rest)
    2. Equilibrium
    3. Return of the Jedi
    4. Gladiator
    5. Jurassic Park
    6. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
    7. The Fifth Element
    8. Top Gun: Maverick
    9. Pirates of the Caribbean (only the first movie, forget the rest)
    10. Stardust

Honorable mentions to: John Wick, Star Trek: Into Darkness, Hook, Shrek & Shrek 2, Men in Black (only the first movie, forget the rest)

Warden, Bowser, Imrahil and 2 others like this.

Very cool idea :) I'll come up with a list, although they're not in any particular order.

    1. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
    2. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
    3. The Mummy
    4. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
    5. The Road Warrior
    6. The Mysterious Island
    7. Captian Nemo and the Underwater City
    8. Jurassic Park
    9. The Golden Voyage of Sinbad
    10. The Lost World
As you can see, I like a lot of older movies in this genre. Not that there aren't some great ones made more recently, but I do think a lot of modern action/adventure movies are way more action or comedy than adventure, and the adventure part was what attracted me the most as a kid.

The main reason I was exposed to so many older movies was because of my parents watching them with me. They wanted to show me some of the films they had grown up liking (or at least remembered), and my appreciation for them has remained to this day.

My list, based on the genre selection from IMDB ;)

    1. THE LORD OF THE RINGS (trilogy) (It pains me to see they are on none of the lists above :( )
    2. Gladiator
    3. The Guns of Navarone
    4. Inception
    5. Jurassic Park
    6. King Arthur (2004)
    7. The Matrix I
    8. Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves
    9. Indiana Jones, the Raiders of the Lost Ark
    10. The Eagle has Landed
The Honorable Mentions are a long list, here are some in no particular order:
Hungergames I, 300, Avatar, Black Hawk Down, The Bourne Identity, Deadpool, Die Hard, Inglorious Basterds, Pirates of the Caribbean I, Star wars (I-III)

For me, it is more of a Fantasy movie than an Action/Adventure, so it might just make an appearance in a later list of mine. Like I said, genre categorizations will differ from person to person and from website to website. And that's okay.

I held off on Lord of the Rings because I assumed there would be a fantasy category later. Same with Star Wars because I figured Sci-Fi would be a separate category as well.

You can be sure you will find The Lord of the Rings on the top of many of my movie lists ;)

My take is that movies will not be exclusively assigned to one list

The idea was to avoid that very thing. Otherwise each genre list becomes repetitive and uninteresting.

I've been following this thread for a while, and my goodness it'll be difficult for me to pick out a top ten list.

One question I have is will animated films (Disney, Dreamworks e.t.c) be a separate category or will they be judged based upon the genre they depict as per live-action films?

action / adventures... for certain movies, i really don't know.
Is matrix more a sci-fi movie or an action one?
Is sci-fi action (Aliens, Predator, Edge of tomorrow...) a genre which stands on its own? I tend to think so.

as a further limitation, I've forced myself to avoid the same main actor in more then one movie: for example, if I'm listing Russel Crowe for "the gladiator", i cannot insert Master & Commander, as much as it's a masterpiece.

    in no particular order:

    Gladiator
    Die Hard
    Indiana Jones - last crusade
    The warriors
    Last of the Mohicans
    Jurassic Park
    Commando
    Lethal weapon
    Bourne Identity
    Rambo - first blood

I agree, but I don't want to discuss Star Wars until we get to Science Fiction

There will be an animated genre list upcoming in a few weeks.

That will depend on the person making the list. It ultimately comes down to what genre best captures the film for you. @Lizards of Renown has it listed in action, while I have it listed in science fiction. Either categorization is perfectly acceptable.

For now, I'm sticking primarily with the major genres. Hybrids are fun, but I worry that they would fragment the lists too much. I want to see the best pitted against the best.

The order is the point. How do they stack up against one another?
