I was going to post a certain YT video made by Lord Tremendous... but i stopped.
    It still hurts me.

Look this is going in circles, is getting really boring, and is becoming annoyingly predictable. So moving on.

I mean, I spend like 200,- a year on models max. If only that could get me a house, would make live a lot easier.

Less to do with the actual game and more with the specific topics I find interesting combined with the views of those active in them, as well as those views being relatively stable, that result in very similar discussions repeating themselves.

Par for the course for these types of debates.

Then you should create your own tactic threads and start exploring new avenues of discussion.

Those old Lord Tremendous battle reports were the best, not in terms of elite tactics, but for fun and entertainment.

That particular video marked an end of an era. He released a bunch of battle reports after the discontinuation of WHFB, focused on Warmachine, X Wing, T9A, 40K and Kings of War, but they could never fill the shoes of Warhammer Fantasy 8th edition.

Imagine what could have been if GW had to foresight not cancel the very game that Total War: Warhammer was based on. I guess we'd be on WHFB 10 edition by now.

No matter, it all turned out okay in the end. My love for 8th edition has only grown. #WarhammerMasterRace #WarhammerProper

If GW had released a Warhammer Fantasy 9th Edition in 2014 instead of pointless 7th Edition 40K, and continued to follow their original 4-year Edition release schedule, we'd have actually be in an 11th Edition, released in 2022. 40K, by contrast, if it had had its 7th Edition released in 2016 as it should have been, would be in its 8th Edition and awaiting a 9th Edition next year.

I was assuming a 2015 release of an imaginary WHFB 9th edition (the same year that AoS was released) and a five year release cycle. Your assumption of a 2014 release and a four year cycle is just as valid though.

The time between edition releases has varied over the years...

I've started buying a good portion of the new scenery elements for Warcry to create my long-awaited Lustria-Seraphon jungle-themed table, and these marvels can't be missing. I just need to figure out if they can be assembled without the bamboo structures

Being plastic, I figure they could be cut away if the alternative build isn't possible. Could potentially add to/reinforce the image of the ruins.

As a side note, I miss the DIY element of scenery and terrain in table top gaming. Does anyone else miss that?

Meh, given the cost of terrain boxes, and the relative small amount of stuff you tend to get in a box, doing some DIY is kinda mandatory if you want to build an actual scene and don't want to go broke.

I feel the exact same way. I remember a time when GW actually promoted DIY terrain projects. I still own a couple of GW terrain building books.

For me it's not even the cost, but rather that an overreliance on terrain kits makes things boring. The kits themselves are often quite nice (I own a couple myself), but when every gaming board is comprised of the same terrain, it cheapens the aesthetic and immersive experience. Not to mention that building custom terrain is creative, fun and skill-building.

Of course, GW would rather monetize the terrain aspect of the hobby as well. It's doubly bad when they write rules that require the purchase of their terrain kits.

Luckily there are still great pieces of DIY terrain being built out there. GW's reach is not absolute.

To be honest, the most confusing thing about GW's terrain kits is that they are phased out so quickly, which means that if you want to build a varied set of official terrain you'll have to spend years collecting it. You can't just show up and buy 4 boxes of terrain and have some nice variation.

The warcry kits are especially weird, this is the third or fourth Gnarlwood themed terrain set, and like the 6th or 7th warcry terrain set. You'd think they'd continue selling them, especially the Gnarlwood ones since they can fit together and make some easy kitbash fodder to build something big. But you can only get 1 of the old terrain sets on GW's site. Which just seems stupid. It'd be so easy to convince people to buy multiple boxes to get some extra variation in terrain, especially when the boxes have the same theme and fit together nicely.

Of course... once you've paid GW for it, it's time to move on so that GW can sell you the next thing. I'm sure that the bean counters over at GW HQ have crunched the numbers and found that it is more profitable this way. Hobbyists be damned.

There's not really anyone stopping you from doing so. Granted, I do need to at some point resume a watchtower build I got some of the framework done for.

Sure, they might be going for FOMO.
But they do provide a decent selection of terrain for 40K and LOTR, at least for some thematic battlefields. AoS is the weird exception with the only readily available terrain being faction terrain.

I know that. If you would like, feel free to check my painting blog to see some DIY terrain I've made. I'm just bemoaning the attitude shift where DIY terrain was actively encouraged to the current situation.

Not much now - again the 40K terrain is mostly faction terrain, with just the small amount of terrain released for 10th, the terrain from Proper 40K that's on Made to Order this week before GW ditch it again and a couple of older Sector Mechanicus and Sector Manufactorum kits as the only exceptions - certainly not the far cry from the AoS range as you say it is.

As for Middle-Earth, yes they have kept the terrain for that, but bear in mind that the Middle-Earth team is not one of the main teams and works differently to them as we already know. Additionally, Middle-Earth didn't have much in the way of terrain to begin with - what you see on the Middle-Earth product listings now is pretty much all the terrain GW have ever made for that game, so GW can afford to keep all of it going. And even some of that they're still getting rid of, like the Gondor Mansion they only released barely a year ago - that thing is now Sold Out Online, at least on the UK site.
