When people first fall in love, they fall in love with an idealized version of their partner instead of their real partner. It takes a while to learn the "real" version of a person.

Successful relationships, people to learn to love their partner's flawed selves and unsuccessful relationships break apart.

I think parents see in their opposite sex children the idealized aspects of their partner and tend to love them unconditionally. Parents see themselves in their same sex children and they want to purge the flaws from themselves to make better versions of themselves.

Some say, dissecting joke is like dissecting a frog. No one has fun and the frog dies, but I'm having fun.
