Hi Nuplar here. I was a dweller of this jungles long time ago. Forgotten are the tales of username and password.

I recently catch Up with The Old World and try to be creative with the tools they gave us.

For context I'm using 1.5.1 patch and Renegade. I see only a few lads posting around and I want to debate some out of the box ideas. With some fluff to have some fun.

Introducing: The treacherous guardian. Once a noble and condecorated Temple Guard, found a magical hat that speaks to him promising powers beyond imagination and ambition to overthrow his Slann Master.

    Model: Temple Guard champion.
    Equipment: Wizarding hat.
    Cost: 68 pts.

Pros: A Wizard only 8 pts more expensive than skink priest. Comes from basic or special pt allowment. Can choose from every Full Lore (those with 7 spells. Those like Lore of Lustria are not available). T4 4+AS (with parry). Sometimes other models can take challenges.

Cons: Only 1 wound. He tries every turn to convince your temple guard to betray your Slann and take over. (Stupidity). More points into an already expensive unit.

My Opinion: if playing with Renegades. Chances of suffering stupidity are low, but if happens It can be funny. I fancy Demonology. There are like 3 godly spells there that our army cannot pick and if you dont get any Signature is an awesome Magic missile. Probably youll get back your investment or start a Saurus rebellion !
Put an EOTG near by to boost chances of casting.

Except for stupidity that is quite bad since the whole unit (Inclusive Slann) do NOTHING and you can lose the game in this way.... i remember you that stupidity cannot be rerolled and you have a 5% chance to fail.
Well the spells are really good, indeed, even if you have to cast them at 7+ even with a EOTG. The magic missile require a that you don't march/charge but i suppose you rely on the other buffs at the first.

    Thanks for the reply!

Its not meant to be competitive as you dont choose the spell, and indeed the failed stupidity roll can be catastrophic. The Slann can be inside or not. But the ability to roll a spells from a Lore we have no access gives us a cool unexpected tool.
Not Only daemonology. Waaagh Magic also OP (but the Signature not that good). Lore of the Wilds have interesting spells too.

Lets go with another entry of my stupid tactics.

    Introducing: Lizarddin
A Hero? A thief? He wants to show you the world. Navigate the Battlefield hunting those pesky units and wizards.

    Model: Saurus Oldblood
Equipment: Flying carpet, sword of striking, shield.
    Cost: 197 pts.

Pros: fly, great mobility, 360° charge arc, skirmisher, loner, reliable hunter, infantry base.

Cons: Mediocre AS, no WS, no AP, cant join units.

My Opinion: Besides the funny name, Lizarddin can do serious work, its target are other skirmishers, light cavalry, warmachines or even charging base to base against a Wizard in a unit.
5 Attacks (6 on The charge). 2+ to hit against WS5 or lower, and 2+/3+ to wound.
As being infantry, can move around skink skirmishers and if you are not the closest model they cannot declare target in shooting. Getting cover from them also.
Can hide very well in Battlefield terrain as it base is not so long as a cold one.
Finally, you can use Apotheosis on him to heal him.

    Hi, Im new here.

TG with a wizard hat is a creative and funny idea. Combined with EOTG and the renegade version of Cold Blood, it should work quite well. Demonology is indeed a powerful magic lore for buffing TGs. However, the risks are also quite high. Aside from the 5% chance of Stupidity—which is much higher than the chance of a miscast and has a 26.5% probability of happening at least once per game—we also face the added risk of miscast spells, including when using Slaan.

Despite that, the strategy remains appealing, and Id like to try it sometime.

As for Old Blood on the Flying Carpet, Ive played several times using Old Blood without a mount. Its genuinely difficult to use. Old Blood often dies randomly to cannons, moving magic vortexes, or even just some regular ranged units with good dice rolls. While Old Blood has excellent stats, if you want to really make use of them without spending a lot of points, the best way is to combine him with Spectral Steed from Necromancy. The points saved from the Flying Carpet can be used on BORT. This turns Old Blood into a terrifying heavy cavalry killer. Being ethereal keeps him safe from ranged attacks and let it easily close the distance. Necromancy is also a powerful lore for Lizardmen. The only thing to watch out for is that Spectral Steed can be dispelled, so be aware of your opponent's wizard's positioning.

    Thanks for the reply!

Regarding Lizardin (he has a name!). Yes, he is vulnerable. But his base being infantry and Flying makes him easier to avoid those hazards you mention. By being around 3" of a unit of the same type (infantry) with 5 or more models, unless he is the closest, you cannot target him. Cannons has to be very precise in artillery dice, can come short or shoot over. Also probably they'll shoot your Big dinos first.

With spectral steed you could achieve better results and spend points in better toys, but even if your frog stays away from dispel range. It can be fated dispelled. But the real question here is... Why not use both!

One of my goals is to make Apotheosis work. So The more "cheap" W3 characters we have The better :)

Later I'll add another stupid tactics :)

Hey! This one is no secret, but a good meme and somehow maybe effective. Gotta try!

    Introducing: Frog Norris
    Model: Slann Mage-Priest
Equipment: Higher State of Mind, Dragon Slaying sword, Sword of Might*, Lore familiar, Battle Standard Bearer , War Banner.
    Cost: 495 pts.

Really? The spectral doppleganger trick? Yes, somehow it returned.

The trick here is that we also buy a common Sword of Might so we could hunt light armoured troops and not only be a Monster Hunter. So we can choose which Magic weapon use. With an static resolution of two we guarantee win combat against anything that has no magical Attacks nor static resolution.

The rest of the character composition is also important. We will make full use of Apotheosis, as in Renegade the Slann can heal himself, we can also bring 2 Oldbloods in cold one.
Or one fully kitted EOTG with skink priest atop so we could use shimmering dragon spell.

With Lore familiar we can get what we need in the match. Probably our 3 of 5 spells will be Apotheosis, Spectral doppleganger and Column of crystal. The other two can be adjusted depending on the threats, maybe you need Monsoon to even block more LoS. Shimmering dragon so your EoTG priest or Oldblood pal can fly in tandem. Maybe glitteting robes because there are some magical shooting. Well i'm not gonna case every spells but you get the vibe.

495pts is really a lot. And this build comes with some problems beyond meta strength:
Your opponent will either have a way to deal with your Slann (especially Warriors of Chaos and Skaven), and then easily take out your 500‑point general… or they’ll end up having a really poor game experience, facing something completely unkillable (pretty much like the Green Knight, especially since you can heal yourself) — even more so if their general on dragon just got nuked in one shot.
But it looks like a lot of fun. And I’m already thinking about how to make more miscast to drop a devastating hit on enemy infs.

Also I recently noted that with Lore Familiar you cannot take racial spells :(

Neither with spells generation take a Lore Signature and a racial spells. You can Only swap one generated spell. Such a Bullshit ruling.

So no guarantee Spectral Doppleganger and Apotheosis.

As for the unfairness of the choice, is not Broken. If you dont cast the assailment you end Up with 1 Attack. And is an answer for an already abusive gamestyle. (2 dragons +2 Monsters Gameplay)

An ethereal Slann is just trash, especially now with lower casting value. If you play not renegade I just suggest lot of carnosaurs. 2 or 3. And a lot of saurus warriors with some flyers and skinks.
