AoS. A basic game just about every weekend.

Awesome! Do you get to play against different armies or is it usually the same group and armies each week?

Same person. Typically same army; Soulblight Gravelords. We're trying out a few different armies on TTS (I'm giving SCE a shot), but I can barely play my lizards. Lol.

    Let's talk about TOW
Not detailed as i would have liked, but let's give it a start. Further considerations will possibly follow

    MINUSES

    1) TOW is of course a cash grab, and even as cash grab it fails spectacularly, given that a large portion of the Old armies has been left unsupported.
Yes, never say never, but I fear that as time passes, the neglected armies will fall behind. This cuts away a good bunch of old players.

    2) The game system is still chunky as an elephant. Enjoy scrolling your rulebook to look for minutiae

    3) despite being still rules-heavy, they dropped the 8th magic system, which was tactical and rewarding (as @NIGHTBRINGER could testify). I get the reason behind this decision, but i miss it nonetheless.

    4) different bases. yep, it can be bypassed simply by glueing larger bases under the old ones, or use tray adapters, but it's still annoying (however, this also counts as a bonus, see later)

    5) as with WHFB, the game system and the miriad of rules is easily abusable, and the few tournaments i saw were filled with a very competitive approach. I don't want to play a polished but still old game, only to face toxic and unfun lists.

    6) even for supported armies, some of the old units are gone and that irks me to no end.

    BONUSES

    1) TOW is a cash grab based on nostalgia, but i like nostalgia, i like fantasy rank & files and the sweet feelings of years ago memories. and even if WHFB was better (spoiler: was not, it was a mess) that system is no more supported, which brings us to...

    2) it's basically a new, supported game. New and young players don't and won't play a 10 years old game, but TOW? sure they do. and they buy Cathay. this means that i am finding people to still play the old way, a thing that before TOW i wasn't more able to experience.

    3) larger bases means also less headaches to place the single models in a packed formation. I have no nostalgia at all for those 3D puzzle games. And the new models absolutely need larger bases.

    4) if played in a not competitive way, with the goal to just have some fun with your friends and field thematic lists, it gives you a great, fun time. And it takes not that much time for a game, certainly less than 40k.

    5) the truly broken spells of 8th are gone, and magic feels more balanced. It's still very strong and the last "patches" to solve some of the problems missed the mark. But it's still better than the last iteration of WHFB.

    6) i don't like AoS lore. i like the more grounded lore of oldhammer.

Thanks for the breakdown! It sounds like TOW has some issues but is still fun. I've held off playing it because Lizardmen are an unsupported army and I'm not sure if they're worth playing.

You said some units got cut even from supported units? Which ones that you know of are gone? I'm guessing it's stuff that's not in production?

    ATM they're good.
BUT I suggest to play them now, because the risk is that within a couple of years they could be made "obsolete"by the supported and improved armies. (if GW's decisions don't change, of course)

Let's use Tomb Kings as example.
some units were left behind at the beginning, but now it seems they are coming back with the incoming arcane journal (for example, the TK herald on horse)
the units i don't think we're going to see, are probably only the ones without an official model (the Hierotitan), but even in that case, who knows? it was present in total war, so maybe it will be included in the future.

Very cool. Another question: Can you play TOW with AoS models? Obviously not ones that aren't in the game like the Aggradons and Spawn of Chotec, but can you fit the circle bases in a tray or on square bases to make them useable in TOW?

yep, there are already numerous trays that resolve this issue (from green sfuff world, miniwargaming, ironheart artisans...)
