I am part of the society for creative anachronism. It's a medieval recreation organization in something of a hobby club. We host events, and all dress up in pre-1600 handmade clothing, of a culture of our own choice, and do a variety of activities. Sca.org/welcome might get you some more information. The painted page you see is what we call a scroll. These are usually hand-painted by members of the group using gouache paint which is similar to what would have been available in medieval, Europe and elsewhere. Brushes are usually modern though. These scrolls are further decorated with written text. Usually in the form of calligraphy. We have an award system which is merit-based. Finished scrolls have a recipients name added, and are then presented by our local region level chapter, called a kingdom, King and Queen. The kingdom and other mid-level groups put out calls for scrolls when needed. My local barony which is a city or county level group put out a request, and I have been painting a few pre-drawn blanks that were given to me. These are the first two of five or six.

Technically, If I was a more talented artist, I could draw whatever I wanted within reason on the same type of paper sheet product we use for these scrolls and then paint it. I have been given a series of six or so blanks with imagery drawn on them, but I have 100% freedom to paint them as I want.
Training yourself to be a Medieval monk, are you? In all seriousness though, looks great so far... what are you planning to write in said monastic style?
I don't write. I just help the scribes guild by painting some artwork that they already have lined out
So, I've been chugging through building the remaining limitanei with swords while working. Should have them ready to prime by tomorrow. After dinner it's back to the painting desk.
Thursday night progress 12 minis painted (8 Palatina, 4 balistarii), 11 Palatina in various stages of work, and basing on the previous 8 Palatina advanced.
Did I need to spend $50 today? No. But did I? Yes. I have been stalking my local Target for at least 3 months now trying to get the dawn of War themed boxed game that Games workshop put out. Simply because it's $170 worth of models for 50 bucks. After 3 months of dropping it, they had one on the shelf today. Another question would be whether I necessarily need more Marines. Which is also a no generally speaking. But this makes a decent expansion on what I got when I built up my tyranid's Force, so I have something to paint in tandem with the tyranids. After all my Romans are done. Or at least when I take a break from the Romans.
