Hello, I’m so pleased to be here! I am a Warhammer Fantasy enthusiast that has only recently decided to take up the hobby with the Lizardmen. While I like other factions too, Warhammer Lizardmen are probably my favourite fantasy race, since I like all things reptiles and dinosaurs, but also astronomy and ancient cultures. In the last few months, I did some more in-depth research and were even able to get hold a copy of the 8th edition Army Book, which I obsessed over. I am so inspired by the Lizardmen story, I will soon buy my first Seraphon Spearhead box and I’m looking forward to fill my house with Saurus and Kroxigors. Besides, I find the existence of a dedicated blog like this so cool!

Now, I am also looking for a bit of advice. I am mostly interested in collecting and painting the miniatures, but I wouldn’t mind learning how to play the game later, so I’m not sure whether to buy the square bases to adapt the Seraphon to The Old World, or keep the round bases and be content with playing Age of Sigmar (I was very annoyed when Fantasy Battle was discontinued and have scarce interest in the new lore, though Seraphon have some fascinating additions). I don’t know what game would suit me better, but for now I just want to start building my lizard army without having to regret later that I chose the wrong bases.

    Welcome along!

Nice to have you excited for our Lizards riding dinos, but who wouldn't? ;)
I am in the same category as you, mainly in it for the models and the painting. I entered just around the switch to Age of Sigmar (AoS) so all my bases are round.

The one thing I know about the square bases is that 8th edition and The Old World (TOW) differ in size. Also there are adapters for round bases to make them square.
I know that quite a few of our active members might suggest you to go with 8th edition Warhammer Fantasy :p

I think it also depends on the active community near you, if you are looking to play regular battles.

Feel free to ask all of your questions, someone will be able to answer you

When starting you painting journey make sure to start a Painting Blog over in the Painting and Converting subforum. Always inspirational to see work of others and get encouraged by others to keep painting ;)

Have fun in our Jungle and see you around!

    Grrr, !mrahil

    Thank you!

As you said, it surely depends on the community in my area, I know there are both AoS players and TOW players, but I am not sure about 8th players (which is a possibility I had not considered). I'll also make sure to share my painting tale in the subforum!

    Grrr!

Welcome to the forum @Quetzalstark !

That's a tough choice you're facing. On one hand, The Old World is a natural continuation of Warhammer Fantasy Battles, which is a game you've enjoyed in the past. In that sense, The Old World is the obvious choice. However, on the other hand, Lizardmen are currently relegated to legacy army status in The Old World, but Seraphon are fully supported in Age of Sigmar. Whether or not the Lizardmen will become an active army in The Old World is anybody's guess and something fiercely debated on the forum.

I'd say it comes down to a couple of questions:

How do you feel about running a legacy army that is not tournament legal and won't be getting updates? Do you feel that Games Workshop will eventually bring them into the game fully?

How do you feel about leaving behind the classic Warhammer Fantasy game-style and lore for something a bit different in the form of Age of Sigmar?

    Welcome to Lustria, @Quetzalstark :)

same as you, i fell in love with lizardmen tnx to the lore of the 8th edition.
Regarding your doubts, alas (unless you're lucky) don't put too much hopes into WHFB... unless you find old players still active in your area, the old style of that game actually can be found only in TOW.
I know old players that stopped playing WHFB but returned with TOW, and new players give TOW a try as it's a supported game.
The only downside is that ATM lizardmen is a legacy army.

Seraphon and AoS are a completely different beast, the game is totally different and also the playstyle.

Probably it's better to have more options: build your lizards with round bases AND pick some "round to square" adapter movement trays for TOW.

    Thank you to both!

Regarding @- Q - questions: I do actually feel a bit skeptical for the Lizardmen's full implementation in TOW. Which is a shame, the whole probleme revolves around this decision, it would have been simpler if Lizardmen were a perfectly supported army in TOW.

At my local store, in the end, they convinced me of the same conclusion of @Killer Angel : since I can adapt the round bases to TOW with the adapter (and not the opposite), building the army with the round base does indeed seem the best option. In fact, since I was convinced and had bought the colours, I've just brought the Spearhead Seraphon box home! So excited!
