Took a Tomb Kings team to a tournament this weekend gone. First time playing them. Came in 4th out of 30. (Actually tied 3rd but dropped a position on casualty count). Very pleased with the result and the overall performance of the TK. 3 wins a draw and a loss. 2-0 vs Lizards, 2-1 vs Necro, 0-1 vs Chaos Chosen, 2-1 vs Orcs, and the best result 3-3 vs Wood elves. I was 1-3 down with 6 turns left. Tied it up with my last go, a dodge, a one die blitz, 2 GFI's and pick up the ball.
That is awesome, congrats on the great showing!! You beat some pretty potent teams. How would you summarize the TK team? What to take advantage of and what to be wary of? How did you overcome their somewhat poor agility?
It was a tournament that used NAF rules. 1.2 mill gold to build the team and then depending on the teams tier category you were allocated a number of skill points, 8 for TK. I took 4 Tomb Guardians (3 with M/Blow and 1 with Stand Firm) 2 Throw-Ras - no skill additions 2 Blitz-Ras - (1 Strip Ball, 1 Tackle) 5 Skellies, 2 with Block and 4 re-rolls The TG on the front line were pretty formidable (5 ST), went down on the odd occasion but never off the field (good AV 10+) Also the new Brawler skill they've been given came in handy. It's somewhat better than I thought Throw Ras were good. They come with decent skills and increased AV to 9+ the new "Secure the Ball" action pretty much ensure you can pick up the ball. The Blitz Ra skills I took were a bit random. I only managed to use the Strip Ball skill once in the 5 games. Tackle came in handy on a few occasions. Overall I was impressed with the way they played. The extra AV on the throwers and blitzers was great. And Thick Skull and Regeneration in the 5 games I only had two players off injured. My dice were on fire as well. In a few games I still had re-rolls to use. I always tried to have either the throw ras or blitz ras have the ball, though in the last game one of my skellies picked up a loose ball and ran (though not for long) The TG movement is poor so I used them to keep a sturdy line or screen. Skellies I used as chaff when needed, either giving assists or tieing up opponents. Of the new skills this season I was impressed with the Team Captain that orcs and humans can take for free. Not only does he get pro skill (personal re-roll) but when you use a team re-roll, after its been expended, he can roll a D6 and on a 6 you get the re-roll back. One Orc opponent had 6 re-rolls and was rolling to get them back. It only worked maybe 1 out of 6 times but it was certainly intimidating. I've got the Cane Toad Cup 2026 coming up in March. Already the most attendees ever at 64. Cut off will be 80. Last year it only had 50. I think I'll take TK again.
