There is a theory that an ancient/medieval explorer saw rhinos, tried to describe them. Then someone passed on a second hand account of his description, then someone passed on a third hand account, etc till you got unicorns.

Unicorns used to be ill-tempered and tough, the national symbol of Scotland. The idea of virgins taming unicorns was a sort of a joke. It takes a mythical creature to tame a mythical creature.

The idea of unicorns being cute and cuddly is a late twentieth century development more or less fabricated by toy companies.
