i use a thick (2 mm) steel wire. i put masking tape on both sides and then cut it in to leaf shape. then paint it green. Incredibly fast, and it can be made to look good (mine were mainly fast) :D

the left one is simply paper that has been painted and glued on, and the right one is masking tape. i prefer the masking tape because it is much more sturdy, and it also gives the leaf a 3D shape. i know the painting sucks, but they are 10 years old and were made in haste back then :D

bend the stick you have at the core of the leaf before you tape it on. then put the bottom part on the leaf on so its smooth, and when you try and put the top half on it will crumble a bit like mine. i discovered it by accident, but it works great imo :D
