I've been painting up my Bastiladon and need to get cracking on the crystal next. The problem is I don't really like the yellow gem in most of the Gw studio pics and I don't really have a clue how to go about painting a realistic diamond gem. Anyone out there care to share their pics and/or wisdom?
This might help... http://ifitshipitshere.blogspot.com/2012/08/paintings-that-are-truly-gems-realistic.html believe it or not these are actually paintings. (Artist page) http://www.carlywaito.com/wp/ [examples]
I really dislike the look of the both the Ark and the Solar. I want more of an artifact of "The Old Ones". This is my plan. http://hoardobits.com/40k/necron/NEC-DOOM-POOL.jpg Used for Ark of Sotek, will have snakes coming out of the portal. Will have 4th skink near the portal. http://hoardobits.com/40k/necron/NEC-DOOM-CANNON.jpg Used for the Solar. This will make it easy to swap from one to the other. How about this as a top piece for an engine of the gods? http://hoardobits.com/40k/necron/NEC-ARK-CHASSIE.jpg -Matt
I've actually got a spare death ray from when I assembled my necron Night scythe, but its far too 40k space-tech and not at all fantasy magic-tech IMHO. Also I'm not sure I'd feel right about using tech from the Old Ones greatest enemies to represent their own tech lol. I'm kind of thinking that painting a realistic crystal might be a bit out of my league, maybe I'll just settle for an arcane-looking effect, it will probably look warhammery enough.
I was going to use a quadgun, but I like the portal too much. I much prefer the portal to a hollow log with a torch under it. As for the Tech... Amazons used to get lasguns, so why not? -Matt
You could always try grabbing a necron crystal and using that? If you ebay 'necron crystal' you get a choice of several different colours. They may need a little bit of cutting though in order to fit. Personally, I have painted two using the similar scheme to GW's from the White Dwarf article; except one is using shades of green, and the other two shades of orange and a white (to highlight the edges). Neither of them are perfect (the green is a little too similar to my Skink green), but I'm not a great painter so I'm pleased with how they turned out. If there's any decent light over the weekend (a lot too ask in the UK in autumn!) I'll try and get some pictures. I agree that the GW yellow is horrible, but I like the approach that they used to achieve it.
Ohhhh how abou these ? http://www.etsy.com/listing/1512255...US&ga_min=3.00&ga_max=0.01&ga_search_type=all they look about the right size.
Those look at bit on the large size to me. Though it's hard to be sure without knowing the size difference between the hand in the picture and my own hand.
Wel there are a couple hundred similar ones on etsy, just search up "acrylic crystal clear". PS. is this one too big as well ? http://www.etsy.com/listing/1208680..._min=4.00&ga_max=0.01&ga_search_type=supplies
I think these are closer to the size of the one included in the kit. http://www.etsy.com/listing/101122024/6-small-crystal-diamond-drop-acrylic?ref=related-2
