Hey guys, i'm just getting back into the army building and I'm starting small with my first list. Its only real purpose is to fight my girlfriend's high elves. I know I'm kinda rusty at the whole force composition deal, so feel free to ladle on constructive criticism. I'm trying to go pretty minimalist with most of the equipment (which is kinda unavoidable in 1000pts) as well as the characters. Besides that, I wanted to try out not taking a saurus hero, which I'm guessing doesn't happen too often. Anywho, its more to have fun and start learning the game again rather than being a competative list, and maybe to try a few off the wall things.

    Heroes - 303 pts
    Skink Priest - Lvl 2
    Skink Priest - Lvl 2
Skink Chief - Xtra hand weapon, L armor, shield, BSB W/skavenpelt banner

    Core - 519 pts
    Saurus x 20 - Spears, Champion
    Ranked Skinks x 16 + 2 kroxigor
    Skink skirmishers x 11

    Special - 175 pts

    Cold One Cavalry x 5

Looks like a super fun list. What you've got there should come out to be 1007 points, so if you need to come in at 1000 exactly just drop a skirmisher.

Depending on how magic heavy you need to go, one priest could be swapped out for a unit of terradons, the chief could drop the shield, the saurus champion could become a musician, and the remaining priest could have Plaque of Tepok for an extra spell. Just a thought, as I always like terradons at this point level.

The list should be fine as is though, and I think the frenzied Skrox unit is going to be a real blast. Let us know how it goes.

I would echo finding a way to squeeze in some terradons.

If she's got a bolt thrower, you could lose a fair amount of infantry before you can get into combat. Another unit that is fun in these lower point lists is a salamander... it's essentially our own version of a mobile warmachine - just shorter range (roughly 10" is ideal range... has some variability but should hit something there unless misfires).

For the cost of saurus cavalry, you actually could put in a salamander with extra handler and a unit of terradons.

But then, I've just generally gone with a primarily skirmish/shooting army for 1000 points and under - so that's where I'm coming from with those suggestions.

Ah this battle ended up going in my favor. Not especially for the right reasons though. I took mostly the list i posted, dropped a skirmisher and the xtra hand weapon from my chief. She ended up with a big spearman block, one of swordmasters, an elf noble on horseback (that's the HE warrior hero right?) a few silver helms and an archer unit. In my first turn, one of the skink priests vaporized himself with a miscast trying to thunderbolt the silver helms, and my cold one cavalry went all stupid. That was pretty much the only bad things for me. Things just started going wrong for the poor girl on her second turn. We're both learning the game again, so hilarious mistakes were made on both sides. My second skink thunderbolted the silver helms successfully (though I was a little wary of him blowing up even more spectactularly) and killed 3, then the skirmishing skinks blowgunned the other 2. The hero was left on his own to charge into the saurus block. This may have been a good Blaze-o-Glory send off, except he missed all 3 attacks (two 1s and a 2 to hit) and was overzealously stabbed to death shortly thereafter (8 hit attacks, 6 wounds, 3 failed +3AS). The skrox unit made up the center of the board towards the spearman block which tried unsuccessfully to charge them. This left the spearmen unit to take the charge from an untouched unit of 2 krox, 16 skinks and a chief, all of whom were frenzied. Other than that, my cold one cavalry got into a good melee with the swordmasters and actually managed to win after 2 turns to carry on into the archers. All in all, it was great fun for both of us thanks for the help with the list!

A few things that came to light during our game that I think bear mentioning.
    1. A frenzied unit of skrox can actually do decent damage to high elf spearmen in close combat.
    2. Swordmasters have 2 attacks each now. I didn't know this, and while the Cold one Cavalry did decently against them, I'm curious how they would fair if they didn't fight swordmasters who kept failing to hit with WS6.

    3. Silver helms are no longer core? This is kinda dumb. You can't have a calvalry based HE army any more? LAME.

Sounds like it was a good battle.

    Couple of things:

    1. Sorry to break it to you, but HE spearmen died to a stiff breeze. She should not have charged, because then she would be fighting with two ranks, rather than three. With ASF it makes a big difference.

    2. She should have used Dragon Princes, rather than Silver Helms. Most of the other cavalry choices are just sub-par.

Anyways, looks good. Glad to see you guys had fun!
