    Hi,

I'm entering a doubles tournament with my friend and his Dark Elves - we each get 1000 points and each players force must follow the normal force organisation rules.

After watching how our games tend to go we have decided that he will go with the "shooty" side of the force and I'll be the "fighty" side.

Couple of things we can't seem to decide on though.

    1) who should take the mage - obviously in a 1000 point game a Slann is a big points sink and would use up a considerable chunk of my force, also it doesn't fit with the "fighty" side as well as the "shooty" side. Conversly a level 2 Dark elf mage isn't as much a points sink and with the sacraficial dagger and Dark magics "I take extra power dice" spell (I forget the name) you can have a very nasty char... I think I've just answered my own question there, lol.

    2) What do I take as my "fighty" units. Counting in a Scar Vet tooled up as the "general" it doesn't leave much choice. I had been thinking 2 units of 30 Saurus Warriors but I'm a little worried that that will be too easy to out flank (though I guess the speed of the Dark elves will combat that a little). would 1 unit of 30 and some CoC/Kroxigor units be better ( I know alot of people don't like Kroxigors on here but in "smallish" games I think they can really do some damage, when your opponant doesn't have the rank bonus) or maybe 3 units of 20 to give me a little flexability.

    3) would you risk something like a Stegadon in a game this size? It could be very nasty against the small units I'm expecting we'll come up against but then again if someone comes along with a cannon it's a large part of your force to lose to 1 shot.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

1stly, at 1000 points you can never take a slann, as his base points is over the 25% lord limit.

secondly, I see no reason why you shouldn't sink atleast 100 points into a Level 2 priest. Perhaps giving him a diadem of power - Great for helping your side dispel - But I think heavens is highly underrated. I aslo think cupped hands may be the best item in the game.... Swap the priest for a beefy oldblood if you prefer.

thirdly. I would take atleast two beefy blocks of Saurus, perhaps not 30, but 24-25 atleast. This should leave you with enough to get one of my favourite units, 10 skinks (helps hold down the flanks, can charge in the flank for disruption, shoots, is fast, etc).

But if you want to be competitive, find room for 3 salamanders (a group of 2 and a group of 1) I don't care if your partner is "shooty", salas are one of the best units in the game, and will give you a distinct edge.

This is what I would take if I were you

Lev 2 Priest + Cupped hands
    24 Saurus + Command
    24 Saurus + Banner + music
    10 skinks
    2 Salamander hunting packs
    1 Salamander hunting pack

Thanks, I'd never thought to check that I could actaully fit the slann in - stupid me.

I can see your point about the skink priest - but there is only 1 set of power/dispel dice between the 2 forces so we decided only 1 person should have a mage to make full use of them - and I think that the dark elf mage beats the skink priest in ability really.

I see what your saying about Skinks - but for the points on 2 skinks you can get a Delf crossbowman - and on average he'll do a lot more damage than the 2 skinks.

Salamanders might be an option, but they are expensive and not too good in combat. The Dark elves arn't taking any h2h units at all so I have to make sure we don't leave ourselves lacking in that area. They would be a nice choice, and if the Delves don't take any Bolt throwers might be a useful option and if I have points spare they would definately be on my list but the combat side has to be my first priority.

Maybe 2 25 blocks of Saurus a 10 block of saurus (for the side charges and such - or to absorbe damage so the the sother sarus units are at full stregth when combat is hit.) and then 1/2 sals depending on what I can fit in?

I'm guessing you agree that the Kroxi/Steg isn't too useful in such a small force?

Here's a frightening pure CC 1000 list. If you are well supported and don't get torn up before you get in, WATCHOUT.

Its 6 points over 1000 and I'm a little concerened about the nearly naked Vets.... but...its mean...

    Fighty 1000 Lizards
Scar Vet + light armor + shield
Scar Vet + light armor + shield + BSB
    23 Saurus + Banner
    23 Saurus + Banner
    23 Saurus + Banner

Here's quite a nice list that i like to use, if i was you i'd let the delf take the mage and go for something like this:

    Oldblood (250)
    burning blade of chotec
    maiming shield
Armour out of the main rulebook. forget its name

23 saurus- HW and shields, full command
    (oldblood here)

    24 saurus- HW and shields

    10 Skinks- javelins and shields

    2 salamanders

Good solid blocks that at this points level will be tough for anyone to take down
