Well, I'm new to WFB, and after looking through all the armies, and weighing pros and cons, I decided I wanted to go with Lizardmen as my army. Since I'm BRAND new to wargaming in general, I figured I'd start with a 1000 point list, and once I got that done, I'd expand to 1500. I still want to be semi-competitive while having fun. My goal is to get an EotG in my 1k list. I know it's a big chunk of points, but I think it's just too cool not to have. Anyway, here's my list(s). Heroes: Saurus Scar-Veteran, with sword of battle, venom of the firefly frog, light armour, enchanted shield, cold one mount Skink Priest, level 2, EotG, War Drums of Xahutec, Plaque of Tepok Core: 16x Saurus Warriors, with Spears, Champion, and Banner 14x Skink Skirmishers, brave Special: 3x Terradon Riders Total: 999 points My plan is to join the Scar-Veteran with the Warriors, use the skinks as a shield, and go offensive with the Stegadon. The Terradons are there for harrassment or for artillery destruction. The unit of 14 skirmishers with the brave is a point sink, I can switch that unit to 2 units of 10 ranked skinks, but I don't know how good that would work out. Thanks for any and all criticism. I'm brand new, so please explain why you would make changes, or why something won't work the way I think it should.
First off, welcome to Lizardmen! There are some recommendations that I have for this list. First off, I may be wrong but I don't think venom of the firefly frog can be applied to magic weapons and since you don't have anything other than a magic sword... I'd ditch it. Otherwise, a decent set up. Might I recommend Sword of Might instead? +1 Strength increases your chances to would and knocks off 1 AS too. Since you're putting him in the saurus I assume you're going for a big block of 6x3 saurus with spears? I would offer perhaps taking out the champion and two others. Then, when you put the scar vet on cold one in, you'll still come out with a 5x3. It'll save some points and the champion isn't worth it anyway. At a minimum take him out and put in a musician. At this junction you should be at around 924 points. You could either put in that second group of skirmishers, not a bad idea, or you could put in a salamander. Either choice is good. That EotG is a hard to build around at 1000 points. If you want it though, go for it. It just makes the rest of your army kind of small. Definitely, this should be your caster at 1500 points though. Best of luck! Sebulba
Thanks! Yeah, re-reading venom of the firefly frog it specifically says mundane weapons. Thanks for the correction. I'll definitely think about what other options I want to give him. When I go to 1500 points I'll probably give him the piranha blade, but I don't think I need that at 1k. The sword of might is a good idea. I want to keep the champion, because the scar-vet's going to be my general, with his Ld of 8. I don't want him to be taken out in a lucky challenge. I'm not sure I need the musician either, with cold-blooded. I think I might drop down to the 5x3 formation though, and just paint/keep the extras for a higher point army. I think I'll make a few of the changes you recommended, and go with 2 units of 10 skirmishers. I'll probably pick up the salamanders at 1500 points. Thanks for the help!
Hi and welcome! First of all, congratulations on creating what is a very viable list, despite it being your first! A few changes I'd personally suggest to your list: Heroes: Saurus Scar-Veteran, with sword of battle, venom of the firefly frog, light armour, enchanted shield, cold one mount as you've already said, the venom's not able to be used on magic weapons Theres 1 of 2 setup I'd suggest (explained at bottom) Skink Priest, level 2, EotG, War Drums of Xahutec, Plaque of Tepok This is a great setup, keeps your Engine mobile and makes your skink a lvl 3 mage for all intents and purposes, just be careful when you commit him to a fight, often it may be better to avoid enemy charge arcs and hover around their line and use your Burning Alignment rather than charging right in Core: 16x Saurus Warriors, with Spears, Champion, and Banner I'm not a fan of the champ. either, but I see your point, I like the 6 x 3 formation personally, this is sort of your Anvil in the army where the enemies going to strike in, I wouldn't recommend shrinking it for this reason. 14x Skink Skirmishers, brave I'd recommend dropping this to 10 and spending the points 1 of 2 ways (explained at bottom) Special: 3x Terradon Riders I LOVE TERRADONS!!! Especially in small games! So, I'd suggest doing 1 of 2 changes to your list, either kitting your Scar Vet out with Maiming shield and sword of battle, Light armour and Cold One (6 Strength 5 attacks and a 1+ armour save! Makes a great multi-purpose Scar Vet.) and dropping the 4 skinks and brave for another Terradon (bringing your unit to 4) and a muso for the Saurus if theres liftover points. OR dropping the 4 skinks, brave and the Saurus champ, changing your scar vet's setup to L. armour, shield, cold one, Burning Blade of Chotec (saves a few points and is a good knight killer, and still has a 1+ save!) and using the points saved for a 2nd unit of 10 Skink Skirmishers to help bulk out your list a little and re-direct your opponents. just a few thoughts, hope it may of helped some.
Thanks for the ideas. I'm not sold on going to 4 terradons in a 1k list, and I'm not made of money, so I'd like to avoid that one. If I drop the champ, I suppose it's not very likely the scar vet would be killed in a challenge, and the possibility does exist for some overkill. How does this one look? Heroes: Saurus Scar-Veteran, with burning blade of chotek, light armour, shield, cold one mount Skink Priest, level 2, EotG, War Drums of Xahutec, Plaque of Tepok Core: 16x Saurus Warriors, with Spears and musician 10x Skink Skirmishers 10x Skink Skirmishers Special: 3x Terradon Riders That's 996 points.
Pretty good! I would just recommend you put a standard back in your saurus. You really want that +1 combat rez in your only big block of troops....
I'd second that, points are the problem... maybe drop the plaque of Tepok? or else you could drop the muso and the Scar Vets shield, putting him on a 2+....
Maybe... and this is just an idea, but I go with one unit of ranked skinks, and one of skirmishers, to free up some points. Then I could add the standard-bearer and the champ back in. Heroes: Saurus Scar-Veteran, with burning blade of chotek, light armour, shield, cold one mount Skink Priest, level 2, EotG, War Drums of Xahutec, Plaque of Tepok Core: 16x Saurus Warriors, with Spears, full command 10x Skink Skirmishers 10x Skinks Special: 3x Terradon Riders That's 1000 points exactly.
