Hello dudes and dudettes. I'm really all new to warhammer, hence the title, and reading various posts about army lists and stuff and completely disregarding all advice they provided I have made a 1000p all skink list. Cause it'd look cool. Anyway, I need a veteran's point of view, so please help a new Lizard general out here 2 Skink Chiefs astride ripperdactyls with shields and light armor to make them at least slightly sustainable 2 units of 20 Skink Cohorts with 2 Kroxigor each Also musician and BSB Backbone of all my stuff, grinding forward like cores do 2 units of 3 Ripperdactyls, where chiefs eventually go For machine/wizard/anysmallfastunits hunting One Bastiladon with solar engine, to prevent core from getting side raped Also read somewhere that the bound spell is kickass Now, unless my mediocre math fails me, this comes to a total of 998 points Will probably be facing Bretonnia/High Elves/O&G mostly, got some other buddies starting just now as well That's it, constructive criticism appreciated! I am still a beginner myself (I have a thread going in here as well) so take my thoughts with a pinch of salt My initial concern is the skink priests on ripperdactyls. Those things are frenzied so you could get pulled into combat with them and easily lose your priests. I have the bastiladon in my list as well for the I boost and Killer spell
Thank you, kind stranger, for your reply. I didn't worry too much about the rippers since every post I've read about them describes them as suicide bombers. The longer they can go on tearing stuff up te better. But in considering that, it probably isn't the smartest thing to put BOTH my heroes in a kamikaze unit, I'm just not sure if I could fit a Stegadon in a 1000p list and I'm even less sure a chief would survive on foot..
Looking at your match-ups, one concern is that you've built a relatively fast-moving list against other fast moving armies. You have a lot of utility, but not much staying power or punch. I've not played all skink lists at 1k points, but a block of 20 won't be winning combat against any high elves or brets. Bump one up to 35 so that you can actually stick around in combat. I'd drop one chief and pick up a level 2 beast wizard. He can buff your skink block to an almost-serviceable combat unit. I'd drop the other chief BSB in your skink block as well so you can stick in the fight a little longer. With Ld 7 you're going to need that re-roll. You might also want to drop a unit of skink skirmishers in the list for the chance to re-direct enemies. Good luck! Let us know how your list and playing turn out.
Two issues with your army: Low leadership. Low damage output. It's kinda the same issue as a pure Goblin army. Just without Amnosity. So here's what I would do: remove the two chiefs and get a scar vet with dawnstone, dragonhelm, light armour, great weapon and cold one. This guy have a +1 armour save that can be rerolled and S7, not to mention he'll be your army general so Leadership 8, coldblooded, should help you way more what you currently have. Get a level 2 priest. That should be a totla of 245pts unless my math is wrong, so still under the limit. 20 skinks will never be any kind of backbone. They're there to die. So instead of 2 x 20 I'd go for 1 x 39 skinks and 3 kroxigors. 6 skinks wide should give you something like 8-9 rank. Since your army is quite mobil and you're playing at 1000pts I don't think I'd be too concerned with artillery, so instead of having 2 x 3 ripperdactyls you should make one big unit out of those. These guys just went from being your war machine hunters to your heavy hitters. Should your opponent decide to throw a bus of cavalry at you these guys will thear them apart if you can get them into the flank. The bastiladon with solarbeam is fine since it'll be your second "caster". Keep your scar vet hidden behind your skink block and move up the board. The Scar Vet will be able do wreck cavalry and monsters and generally be a good support character. The priest should also be hidden behind the skinks. With a musician and banner for your skinks it should be exactly 1000pts. Oh and do remember to keep the rippers near your general As always these are just suggestions so take it how you will. **EDIT** Since you are going up against britonnia you'll probably be taking a charge by a bus full of knights of some sort. S5-6. Here's the deal though: only his front rank can attack your kroxigors, which (if he does what most Britonnia players do) would be 3 models, one if which might be a champ and a hero or a cheap lord). That'll be 6-7 attacks + 3 attacks from the horsies that can be directed at your kroxigors. The interesting thing here though is that he can either do that OR he can decide to kill a bunch of skinks. The big dilemma for a Britonnia player is that should he not break your skink unit in the first turn he'll be facing them with no +2S from lances. To do that he'll have to make sure the skinks have fewer ranks than he does. Should he decdie to go for the kroxigors he'll do a maximum of 4-5 wounds (depending the type of knights and counting horse attacks). The kroxigors will then proceed to swing back with 6 attacks, half gone in the To Hit phase and a good chance for them too all wound. His armour save of 2+ will be reduced to 6+. I'm not sure if he'll have a 5+ ward against these attacks, but the point is that you'll actually have a decent shot at taking out a few knights with the unit that's there mainly to be a tarpit and not kill. Add rippers and the scar vet and the knights will be gone quickly. Should he bring men at arms you just throw the bast up agaisnt those. Remember that it does carry something like 4 skinks who'll get to attack along with the 3 attacks and thunderstomp it has.
That's very concrete advice all, thanks for the feedback. Too bad Skink Chiefs apparently suck, I really like them... Guess I'll just have to get some new stuff to play with! Will report back with tales of glorious victory EDIT Looking closer on this list, I get it to 1020 even without the priest, either I've miscalculated or misunderstood your directions :S
Skink Chiefs aren't THAT bad, they do have their uses, but at 1000pts I'd prioritize other models. Anyway: Scar vet: 145pts. Level 2 priest: 100pts. 39 skink cohorts + musician, banner: 195pts. 3 kroxigors 150pts. Bastiladon: 150pts. 6 rippers: 240pts. That should be exactly 1000pts.
