I posted this over at Librarium Online, but that forum seems dead, so I'm reposting it here:

I used to play 40K and have recently decided to take up fantasy and play Lizardmen. My closest friends who play Fantasy play WoC, Wood Elves, and VCs, so I'm trying to come up with a 1000 point army that is at least decent against those.

    Scar Vet
    -Extra Hand Weapon
    -Firefly Frog Venom
    -Helm of Discord
    -Light Armor

    Skink Priest
    -Level 2
    -Plaque of Tepoc

    20 Saurus Warriors (x2)
    -Hand Weapons
    -Full Command

    12 Skink Skirmishers (x2)
    -Blowpipes
    -Braves

    Salamander Hunting Pack

    Total: 1000pts

My biggest question is whether I should keep Blowpipes. I think I'd prefer the 2 attacks if they always wound on 6s, but some advice would be nice. As you can see I'm also banking on poison being good for my Scar Vet build. Thanks!

In 8th edition, I find that javelins are better suited for my play style. With blowpipes, you march (-1), you double tap (-1), and at greater than 6 inches (-1) you lose the poison attack. Even at close range, vs WE, you will lose poison (as most of the army are skirmishers -1).

Like I said, my play style does not work for blowpipes. I like to get my skinks up close and personal for shooting or redirecting. Plus, the javelin and shield does give them a 6+ (which may save a skink now and again).

As far as your list goes, it works out pretty good. I would try to squeeze in some chameleons (1 unit of 6).

    As for Strategies:

WOC: Not sure, never faced them. I hear that they have high armor saves and they are tough. You would probably want to charge them with the saurus then get a flank charge with some skinks. Or burn them as the come to you (with the salamander).

WE: This army is not very viable in 8th edition (I have heard). Made up of skirmishers, your suarus should do fairly well taking out most of these guys. The treemen you should poison (skinks). You could also take a bsb with the flaming banner to help fight the treemen.

VC: Your goal here is to kill the general (Vampire) then they crumble every turn. Salamander and saurus until you can kill the vampire (general). Note that there can be more than one vampire in the army, you need to take out the general though.

Thanks a bunch! I think I'll drop blowpipes for javelins. Any advice on how to tailor my army against WoC is welcome. I suspect they'll be my biggest challenge.

Does anyone have feedback for me re: my Scar Vet? I'm thinking of dropping the the additional hand weapon for a great weapon. I keep flip flopping.

I play wood elves so I can say that at 1000pts it would be hard for WE to create a competitive list, our sweet spot is 1500 to 2500. You should expect to see some treekin, and dryads at this level, both of which are very powerful with the right support. Chances are he will either have his general as the Spellweaver (lord) or carry a spellsinger (hero), if they have the lord level then expect lore of life, this lore makes a WE list shine. If they only have a hero level wizard then do not worry about magic too much since most of the Athel Loren lore sucks.

Another thing to look out for are Wild Riders, I would try to stuff them into a list if I was not bringing treekin. These guys hit very hard in close combat, and WILL out maneuver any thing you have. He will probably attack skirmishers and salamanders first with this unit so watch out.

To sum it all up watch out for: Treekin, Dryads, Wild Riders, and Spellweaver magic. Anything else you should be able to handle pretty good, just watch out for the speed and flank charges any good WE player will do that to Lizardmen.

Other than WE, WoC should be the biggest threat, VC are manageable as long as you have them crumbling.
