Folks, I am new to LM and WFB. I have only played one game so far as a learner game. I am trying to build a decent list that will be effective, but I am stuck with my hero choices in a sub <1500 point game At most I can spend 375 points. I am sure I will need a L2 Priest I am sure I could benefit from a BSB I can't afford a decent Cowboy at this points level So I need 2 scar vets if I am to benefit from Ld 8 and a BSB. That pretty much means they have to be on foot and within my main block of troops? what do other people do at this level of points? I threw this together as a starting point. My concern would be all three characters end up in my 25 Saurus block. As I will be playing Skaven, Plague could take out all my characters in 1 turn. * Sarus Scar-Veteran - Armor of Fortune, Battle standard, Great Weapon * Sarus Scar-Veteran - Gambler's Armor, Great Weapon * Skink Priest - Dispel Scroll, To a Level 2 Wizard Cheers Martin
You'll start seeing L4s at this point level, so keep that in mind. It is hard to give advice without seeing a list (and there is a forum for that) but ideas include... 1) Naked slann. A typical L4 is 200+. The slann coves with Tali Preservation and +2W standard. 2) Pair of priests, make one +1 dispel. 3) You're still at a point level where you could gamble skipping magic and loading upon dinosaurs and cowboys.
In this particular battle (its another lesson really) I won't be seeing a L4 (I don't think he ever runs one) A Slann would cost me 300 just to start (+25 for BSB) with which would mean dropping some major stuff ad a mucn greater reliance on magic. I did post a potential army list , but was more interested in the low point battle hero builds people do run. I would like to cover both Magic and heroes as I can then learn how it all works. Thanks for the pointers, at this point I don't know what I don't know (if you see what I mean) so everything is new. Martin
False, you can afford a goood cowboy at this points lvl, infact you even posted him earlier in this thread, you just missed the 20 pts for his mount (the AoD BSB). Now offcourse you can just go with the BSB on your other hero, and in fact, scrape off the AoD and instead for for what is one of the best setups, dragon helm / dawnstone and LA. That'll cost 9 pts less than the previous build and be in many ways almost as efficient, if not equally efficient. You can also just go for an OB cowboy with AoD and Dawnstone, he's nearly unkillable. ofcourse you are welcome to have a different view, but if you can't afford a decent cowboy and a lvl 2 at 1500 pts, it's because you're limiting yourself in some way, not because you can't. I'd advice strongly towards grabbing a cowboy, even a cheaper version will do wonders at the 1500 pts mark, they're problem solvers, and even a discount cowboy with Dragon helm and a luckstone should be able to take a beating and deliver one before dying.
Remember that you have a 25% allowance for lords, and another 25% allowance for heroes. So at 1500 points you can easily afford a BSB, a Slann and another cowboy for kicks. For example: Slann Mage-Priest Higher State of Consciousness 360 Saurus Scar Veteran Armour of Destiny Great Weapon Cold One Battle Standard Bearer Saurus Scar Veteran Gambler's Armour Dawnstone Great Weapon Cold One 328 ----------------------- This leaves you with very limited special/rare choices, but if you want characters, nothings stopping you
My issue is needing 2 scar vets , one for general and one for BSB and including the L2 Priest but keeping it all within hero. I ended up here :- Sarus Scar-Veteran Battle standard, Enchanted Shield, Great Weapon, Light Armour Sarus Scar-Veteran Dragon Helm, Great Weapon, Light Armour, Shield Skink Priest (125pts) Dispel Scroll, To a Level 2 Wizard The 25 points for BSB means I can't end up with a cold one unless I drop all the resilient armor options to end up with this:- Sarus Scar-Veteran Battle standard, Light Armour Sarus Scar-Veteran Cold One, Dragon Helm, Light Armour Skink Priest Dispel Scroll, To a Level 2 Wizard I think the above list isn't very resilient for so many points? So end up with this by switching to an old blood Sarus Oldblood Cold One (Thick Skinned), Dragon Helm, Great Weapon, Luckstone Sarus Scar-Veteran Battle standard, Enchanted Shield, Light Armour Skink Priest Dispel Scroll, To a Level 2 Wizard This nails me at exactly 1500 but leaves the old blood a little bare of armour. Quick note, the shields are kinda useless with great weapons. You want +1 saves ideally, in CC - having +1 against arrows is nice, but even just 5 points is 5 points wasted if it only works against ranged attacks. Also, you need to remember that a Cold One gives you +2 to AS for just 20 points, that DOESN'T cut into any magic item budget. If you want resilience, you really should consider Cold One mount, especially since it also renders you immune to stomps. Take your Old Blood: 4+ base armour save, +2 for cold one lands him at 2+, and +1 from the helm, landing you at +1. Even the Scar Vet gets 5+, +2 from the shield +1 from LA, and lands at 2+ - that's not bad. I'll be honest though, at just 1500 points, I'd seriously consider whether or not you need a dispel scroll. I would never take one at such a low point level, but that's just me. It never felt worth it when I did. You could also throw your BSB on your Lord instead. That would free up enough points to get your cold one.
A couple of points 1) Nobody has a shield and great weapon in the final builds 2) He hit my main saurus with Plague and killed 10 in 1 turn... I would want a dispel just in case 3) You can't have a BSB and Lord in one unless it is a Slann, hence all the messing about with 2 non skink characters as per the first line of the post to keep the rerolled LD 8 Splitting between Hero and Lord helps with the points. I guess I am also trying not to put too many eggs in 1 basket as well. Thanks for the comments, really helps me refine my thinking. Martin
Personally I'd run a slann. They can be tough to deal with at lower point values' as long as you don't blow yourself up. Leaves you free to take 2 scar vet cowboys with very decent kit. No priest, but you have a slann to dispel now. Alternatively you could run Old blood Cold one Great weapon Light armor Dawnstone 4+ ward Scar vet bsb Cold one Great weapon Light armor Dragonhelm lvl 2 priest with scroll About 525 points all together leaving you 600ish for special/rare after core. Could go with 3 x10 skirmishes 20 cohort 10 cohort, two sallies, 7 or 8 chamo skinks and as many cold ones as you could fit, Push it forward and pew pew. Or you could ditch the chamo skinks and take the level 2 to a 1 and add in a second scar vet cowboy. Cold one great weapon and armor of destiny. Bus it up.
