Need some help finding a decent all around 1500 point list. My friends and I decided to start playing Warhammer a few weeks ago and we are hooked. I chose Lizardmen, while they chose HE, DE, WE, and Empire. We are trying to gather up 1500 point lists we can play on a regular basis. I am really excited to start using the slann, but I want to be flexible on what lore I'm using. From some of the other posts I have read, this is what I was thinking:

Slann Mage-Priest: BSB, Focus of Mystery, Rumination

    350

Scar Vet w/ Cold One, Great Weapon, Light Armor, Venom of Firefly Frog

    126

35 Saurus Warriors: Full Command w/spears
    12 Skink Skirmishers
    12 Skink Skirmishers
    10 Skink Skirmishers

    688

    10 Temple Guard: Full Command

    195

1 Salamander Hunting Pack w/ extra handler

    80

    1439 Points

I know I'm not as close to 1500 as I should be, but I'm just not sure where points are best spent.

I planned on having the scar vet join the saurus warriors for some extra beef in front.

I like having a big unit of saurus warriors with spears for the extra rank, but if I start getting them slaughtered then I won't like it anymore!

Keep in mind that I am using the models that I have purchased already, so that's why my list looks as it does. I'm not opposed to buying more units if it gives me a sizable upgrade for the points, but my wallet is starting to hurt... I'm sure you can relate.

Any and all critcism and help are welcome!

On a side note... Am I reading this right that when a slann is in a unit of Temple Guard the temple guard strength is reduced to 3? (Slann rule: Unit strength 3)

In regard to the Slann/unit strength 3, no, it does not reduce the Temple Guard strength to 3. Unit Strength was a 7th edition rule that is completely ignored in 8th edition. Putting a Slann in TG makes the TG immune to psychology and stubborn though. :D

I seriously think 10 TG is more a deathtrap than a bodyguard. They are just too easy to kill at that small size.

the 60 points left over could get you a unit of chameleon skinks. I find they are worth there weight in gold.

Thanks for the help on the rule. It seemed odd to me.

I wasn't sure if the temple guard would be enough or not. Would you recommend more temple guard or a lone slann at 1500 points?

Chameleon skinks do sound like they might be kind of fun to use. I will try to fit them in.

I havnt really used heroes yet. Should I be putting a scar vet in? Or do they make enough of a difference that I should be putting more in?

New to the game, any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Scar-vets are pretty good heroes. With a little bit of upgrades, they can be quite tough to kill, and they hit decently hard. The one you posted isn't bad, but he isn't great. Venom of the Firefly Frog is doing very little, especially since none of your listed enemies have ethereal troops. Basically get to a 1+ armour save and then add either a re-roll or a ward save. If you want a great weapon, I'd probably give him Armour of Destiny.

Personally I always like lone Slann in my games (2000+), although many many people have success with Temple Guard. My guess is 1500 doesn't offer enough points to run TG, unless you commit to a very small army built around points denial. I suggest AVOIDING that plan when just starting to play - examine the variety. That would also requires you to buy more TG, which your wallet does not like. So for you, I suggest running solo Slann and leaving out the TG for now.

Prety sure you can use VoFF againt etherial troops.
since it causes your mundane weapon to have poisioned magical attacks.

Sure. That is the main reason to take it. But none of this listed enemies are VC, so ethereal troops aren't present.

I agree that the 10TG are kind of pointless for combat sake. May be a option if u just want a stubborn look out sir bunker for your slann. I've taken to putting the slann in my saurus and not using TG altogether. they are just too expensive.

I'd try and get a second salamander in the list and drop the spears. just not enough return on them for saurus warriors. 4+AS and a 6+ ward is a much better deal than 5 more attacks striking last (unless you help them out with Light)

Like I said before, I havn't played much yet but a lone slann seems like such a huge target to me! What is a good setup that would help him survive and still be an effective magic user at 1500. My lord total can't be more than 375 points. That's kind of the reason I was thinking temple guard. You could give the slann good magic add ons and the temple guard would hopefully take all the heat.

Once again, thanks for all the help! Can't wait to play some more!
