Dec 18, 2010 - I was running: Slann Focus of Mystery - Lore of Light Focused Rumination Cupped hands of the old ones 21 Saurus + Banner 24 Saurus + Spears + Banner 10 Skinks 10 Skinks 3 Terradons 6 Chameleon Skinks 2 Salamander Hunting Packs 2 Salamander hunting packs ---- 1500 He was running: Warrior Priest - IN spear unit. Lev 2 Wizard - rod of power + power stone - lore of Fire 26 Spearmen - detatched 10 Crossbows - detacth 10 Handgunners 20 Halberdiers - detacth 10 Handgunners - detacth 10 Handgunners 12 Free company 3 Cannons --------------------- We played on a terrainless board, because the terrain was at our buddies house. He spread out in deployment, with 2 cannons in one corner another in the other, and his units in the middle, pretty standard. I Deployed 1 unit of skinks opposite the far cannon (on the left flank), put the salamander units each directly across from the parent units and deployed everything else on the far right. This is known as the "oblique order" or "denied flank" - used most famously by Frederick II (the Great, of Prussia). the idea is: Focus your forces on one flank and then turn to defeat each enemy unit one at a time "in detail". I moved my terradons (vanguard) up toward the 2 cannons as far as I could. And deployed my camo skinks behind the left flank cannon. I won the roll for first turn. I flew the terradons in behind the 2 cannons. Moved up everything, except for the Sally opposite the spearmen (I was a little afraidof the handguns and crossbows, so I stayed out of range of the guns. In Magic, Winds were weak. Pha's protection was dispelled (but he used all of his dice) so I cast Burning gaze and Banishment, dealing a total of 6 casualties to a detatchment of handgunners. In Shooting, the salamanders opposite the halberdiers (which were almost directly opposite my Saurus block on the right flank) caused 7 wounds on trhe halberds, both sets of skinks came up short, the terradons missed, and the chamo skinks double shotted (ABSOLUTELY DEMO'D THE CANNON ON THE RIGHT) 3 poison wounds awesome! His turn He wheeled the units in the middle to try and catch up with my deployment, except for the crossbows which reformed to face the chamo skinks. Funnily, his halberds and detatches stayed put. He thought about turning to facce the terradons but they were hidden behind his cannons. In Magic, I dispelled an upped Fireball aimed at my Saurus, and he cast a flame cage (I saved the 2 wounds it caused) on the other Saurus. In shooting, His one cannon misfired and the other overfired, killing only 2 of the spear saurus. His handgunners fired terribly, cauisng only 3 wounds on the skinks. My turn again, No charges, I didn't move the flame caged saurus (1 S4 to each model? no thanks) I marched up the other saurus and moved up the skinks and the camo skinks towards his Crossbows (short range). I had the terradons fly over one set of handgunners (dropping rocks for 6 wounds) and land right infront of the unit that was magicked down to 4 models last turn. Magic, I cast banishment and shems gaze on the other set of handgunners, panicking them off the board. I also resolved a Pha's Prot on 12' radius. Effecting both saurus , 1 skink unit and 1 sal. Shooting, The salamasders Wrecked the 2 parent units, causing a total of 21 wounds (panicked the Halberds off the board). the chamo skinks panicked the crossbows with a nasty 5 wound double shot. and the skinks dropped a couple of free companies with some jav tosses. The Terradons His turn, he charges the jav skinks with the free companies, skinks flee, he fails. No other charges, (weird). He moves the out of position guys and fails to rally the crossbows which vacate the battlefield. Magic, I let him resolve a small fireball on my Sally, 2 unsaved wounds on the sal. I dispel his flame cage attempt. Shooting, both his cannons fail theri Pha's prot test, lol. His handgunners did nothing. My turn, I charged his cannon and got in with the Saurus.I turned with the Other Saurus to face what was left of his Spears. Magic, I cast the upped Bironas Timewarp Irrestible and gave the miscast to his caster with cupped hands. He conceded. Total. Annihilation. I lost 5 models, 2 Saurus and 3 Skinks.
Very interesting strategy! I like the idea and I cant wait to see what other ones you use! Very usefull especially since our army can do a VERY good job at denying flanks as well as completely destroying an enemies flank.. Very nicely done
@ Elmquasmash: thanks! although technically, it's "nice tactic", as strategy is a higher order maneuvering of armies (like on a continental map) and includes logistics, propaganda, etc. This is a very common confusion, and one that is very early dispelled in the study of military history. @ Hoverboy: good call, I forgot that rule. I'll let him know.
Good call I like that I am learning these things just by playing a hobby! Strategy would be like if we were playing the 'Might Empires' campaign and tactics are basically the small battles that take place and what we do to win them then?
Essentially. Here's some expanded definitions. Grand Strategy is the entire goal of the Nation in a conflict: IE: cut the Germans off from oil in Africa, etc. Strategy is moving entire armies around, and everything that goes with that. IE: lines of communication, feeding the army, where to attack, whether to seek battle, picking the spot for advantageous terrain, etc. etc. etc., There are tens of thousands of books on this, but By far the 3 best are: The Art of War by Sun Tzu, On military matters by Vegetius, and On War by Clausewitz. Tactics is the actual deployments and movements of units on the battlefield: IE: Warhammer. For brilliant tactical ideas, check out some of Hannibal's battles in ancient Rome, particularly Cannae. I feel it would be a great Lizardmen tactic.
you've given me some ideas on how to beat my friends who has the empire. thanks and good luck with future games.
