Ok, so I've read a lot about playing vs Woc on this forum....I'm not sure I have a chance. From what I've seen, it appears that I need big blocks and strong magic to back up. The problem is....at this points level I simply can't get enough considering I have no idea what my opponent will be bringing to the table. So far the idea is a block of 30ish Sarus and a block of 20 temple guard with Slann running lore of Light (Neither with champion but both have standards & musicians). plus an Ancient Steg. Thats all my points and I feel really 'naked' compared to my usual force. At this small points game I usually don't use temple guard at all, I keep my slann in a bunker of 10 skirmishers but with no shooting and all melee, my opponent will be engaging every unit I have. Does anyone have any specific advice for such a small points value against such a scary opponent please...
How about strict point denial?. Swarm him with low cost high movement units and by swarming i mean run around him - make redirections, have him waste his time and earn the few points you can off of him with one or 2 dedicated combat blocks while skinks block the way to your "winning combats"? dunno if this could work - but i think it would.
A few thoughts (from an amateur that's only played agains WoC a few times): Lore of Metal or Life might be a better option against WoC? They seem to have a lot of good armor saves, so Metal would be able to wound and bypass a lot of that. I bring up life because of things like Flesh to Stone, Earthblood, and Regrowth, you might be able to just grind him down. Dwellers, while only working 1/3 for most of their units, still does affect an entire unit with no saves allowed. Not sure what you want to put on your Slann, but in a 1200 game I ran one with no upgrades and Lore of Life. I had some really awful magic phases at the start but right at the end I managed to pull off a dwellers and it flipped the whole game in my favor. Long story short: take a Slann but don't invest more points then you need to on him. Probably just BSB in a TG unit with Razor Standard. A level 1 skink priest for Wyssan's isn't bad either (though Blizzard is also good against them, and easier to cast). The popular skin chief on ripper could be good too. He's I6, that should normally go first and have a 2+ save. You made no mention of a cowboy. You could tool up a scar-vet with a 1+ reroll for not a lot of points. With the Ancient Stegadon, what sort of upgrades on that? I've pretty much always been running mine with sharpened horns and EotG. That'd allow you to cast your lore easier (so long as he's not running the same) and give your guys a 6+ ward if you want to run spears. It's a load of points, but I've found it worth it every game, even when I have to worry about cannons. Plus it'll protect your blocks from his Hellcannon (he -does- have one right?) on the first turn if he goes first. Now I know you can't fit ALL of these things in to one list, but hopefully this will help you out.
Hello, I did re-do my querie in the army lists section - http://www.lustria-online.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13143 - which would give you a little more detail on how this is turning out. Also had a few more replies on that thread. Sorry for the duplication.
