Tournament coming up soon, so I was just wondering if I could get some feedback on my list. I'm not sure who/what I'll be going up against, so a balanced army would be preferred. Saurus Scar-Vet: Light Armor, Shield, SotSR Skink Priest: Lvl. 2, Glyph, Ancient Steg w/ EotG Skink Priest: Lvl. 2, CoF 10 Skink Skirmishers 10 Skink Skirmishers: Javelins 15 Saurus Warrior: spears (x2) 12 Cham Skinks + stalker 4 Terradon Riders 10 Temple Guard: Revered, BBoC, Musician, Standard - SSoC Suggestions?
Looks prety good, but the gear set up could be better. Saurus Scar-Vets are best on Cold Ones, Burning Blade and Enchanted shield is a great combination of offense and defense, and at least 1 source of flaming attacks are very useful. The Skink on the engine reeeaally want a Plaque of Tepoc, it greatly enhances his effeciency as he is more likley to roll at least 1 spell worth chucking 4 dice at. Javelins on skrimishers is a very suboptimal choice and is in 90% of all situation inferior to blowpipes, paying 10 pts for a downgrade is pretty stupid. Saurus warriors looks good, but 15 big units can benefit a lot from a command group. Common set ups are 12 with spears and no command, 15 with spears and mu+standard or 18 with spears and either mu+standard or full command. The champion is pretty useless, they only want poison hits and a champ won't score more 6s or shoot more darts. The unit is also way to big, you will rarely get an opportunity to scout with 12 guys, split them up into 2x6 to make them a lot more effecient. Terradons looks good, 1x4 or 2x3 is fairly standard, and they won't let you down. Temple guard without Slann is expensive and they pay alot for their Slann-supporting rules. BBoC is good but are better on a scar vet, SSoC is more pts dumped into a fairly expensive and not particurarly effective unit. With 2+ save it is hard to kill but without a BSB and Stubborn they will easily break in combat and get run down. For the same price you could take a lot of chaff (another unit of terradons, salamanders, more skinks etc) or even better; an Ancient Stegadon for the foot Priest (which makes the army pretty cheesy but still!).
Thanks for the info! I don't think I can get another Ancent Steg on the foot priest, or a salamander seeing as it's a 1750. Also, I forgot to mention that both of the Saurus units do have mu+standard. I put them in 15 so I could do a 5x3 block to get the rank bonus. I put the javelins+shield on the skinks so they could have an armor save, but with an initial run today I realized that that wasn't exactly a bright idea, so that will be going. If I get rid of the TG, what would be a good unit to take? Quite a few points to spend.
Erains makes good points as usual. Remember that Stegadons as character mounts do not take up rare/special slots. So you could take 2 EoTGs and still have a Salamander. I would reccomend you make the Scar vet: Scar vet - Cold One, Enchanted Shield Burning Blade, light armour, Battle Standard Bearer 170 points I reckon you should have something like this: EoTG EoTG (note that double EoTG make the list very cheesy) Scar Vet 15 Saurus 15 Saurus 10 Skinks 10 Skinks 4 Terradons 5 Chameo skinks 5 Chameo skinks 1 Salamander I think that roughly fits into 1750, depending on what you give the Priests (ie - not much, just give one Plaque of Tepok).
Oh yeah! I forgot that mounts don't take up rares. That helps. Thanks for the input! Should be a damn good list now. Now all that I need to watch out for are the dwarves.. They always seem to ruin my day.
Okay, here's what I have now: Scar-Vet: Light Armour, BBoC, Enchanted Shield, Cold one, BSB Priest: Lvl 2, EotG, PoT Priest: Lvl 2, EotG 10 Skirmishers 10 Skirmishers 15 Warriors 15 Warriors (both with Spears, mu+standard) 5 Cham skinks 5 Cham skinks 4 Terradons Salamander + extra handler That comes out to about 70 over 1750, so what should I get rid of? I don't quite see anything besides the sallie and I doubt that's a good idea. Ideas?
Saurus warriors are just as good in units of 12, deployed 6 wide. You lose 1 static CR (which you would lose after taking 1 wound anyway) and you gain 4 S4 attacks which will often score at least 1 active CR, so dropping the Saurus down to 12 each would save you around 72 pts. Either that or drop a Cammo unit. Overall it looks like a very solid 1750 list.
I would say drop the Standard and Musicians (personally I never take them, the Standard is a free 100VPs and the Musician is to situational). I also think that in the context of the list you could drop a unit of skinks (this still leaves you with 5 redirecting units, which is still alot).
