Hi guys, new to fantasy but have just become the proud owner of a lizardmen army. I have had a couple of games against dwarves and skaven. dwarves were smashed but i got battered by the dirty infested skaven. got mulllered by a plague spell and the hellpit caused carnage. dont even mention the plague furnace! we are playing a round robin 1500 point league and i would like any advice on good rounded lists. Also im looking at getting a couple of extra units for some variety but not sure which yet. here is my available units - 1 x slann mage 1x skink priest 20 x temple guard 48 x saurus 10 x skink with javelins 10 x skink with blowpipes 1 x ancient steg with EOTG 1 x steg with bow any advice on a 1500 point army and any units that could be added to make it more rounded would be greatly appreciated. i have been reading the forum with great interest and am now torn between sallies and rippers. thanks
A Slann could be considered overkill at this points level. If you were going to bring one, I'd suggest keeping him cheap with just one Discipline (Wandering Deliberations or Loremaster High). Otherwise if you weren't committed to it, two level 2 Skink Priests are fine (or even a 2 and a 1). My only real advice would be to grab a Scar-Vet on a Cold One as your first point of call. These guys really are the workhorses of the Lizardmen book. Otherwise I think you've got a great start there.
Sallies will help with crowd control versus both the skaven and dwarves. If you have trouble with warmachines then you might want to invest in the rippers/terradons. Do you know how you want to build your characters? I think GCPD has it right with either keeping the slann rather cheap or swapping him with a scar-vet/oldblood and then you can also get another skink priest.
i hadnt considered a scarvet, how would you deploy/ what would you use him for? character wise i hadnt thought either as our first round robin league we are not using them to get us noobs up to speed. what are your thoughts as i wjill need to add one or two to the list. i have found my skinks quite useful on the flanks and seem to be a pain in the arse when cobined with a block of saurus as the main unit. other thought were around swarms as i like the idea of providing my saurus with poisoned attacks? do they work well? also EoTG steggy seemed quite high points for a 1500pt game, should i dumb him down to a standard stegadon with bow and use the points elsewhere? i found with the useful wardsave it provided it meant limiting my initial deployment options as i felt i needed him inbetween a block of templeguard and sarus.
Well, the cowboy is really a swiss army knife sort of unit. He can go after annoying chaff, hold up a unit by himself, mage hunt, and even monster hunt. The usual build for the scar-vet is on a cold one with armor of destiny and a great weapon. This guy will have S7 and a 1+ armor save with a 4+ ward for just over 150 points. Do you mean Special Characters? I was meaning just regular characters e/g lord/hero choices. If you would like some advice for SC then consider Tetto-ekko for a good substitute instead of a slann or Gor-Rok for a great combat monster that makes any unit stubborn. They are also both hero choices so you can either invest in a oldblood cowboy (tetto) or a slann (Gor-Rok) without maxing out your character points. I find swarms to just be extra combat resolution losers. Anything you are facing can toast the swarms and they just give your opponent easy CR instead of trying to get it out of the saurus. I like the EoG steg but you can downgrade him and still have points for those salamanders I mentioned. Or you can swap him out for a Bastilodon with the lazer. The bastilodon is a great support monster for your saurus.
