Ok, so i have recently been looking into fantasy. i played it like 7 years ago in 6th? edition, when i first started playing Warhammer. i moved onto 40k and basically forgot about fantasy until now. For some reason I now have an urge to start playing fantasy again. I have a small army of both lizardmen and orcs, but have decided to go with LM as i didn't think that i could face playing with animosity again. So, I have had a skim through the rule book and a look at the LM army book, and come up with this list. i would like it to be fairly easy to play, but that not to the degree that to limits the effectiveness of the army. lords (max 375) slann lord - 2 disciplines ( not sure which but I am looking at higher state of consciousness, soul of stone, focus of mystery and the focused rumination as options). - cupped hands of the old ones (this seems to be a staple, but is it worth it as this point level?) 370 heroes (max 375) skink priest 1 - level 2 - plaque of tepoq skink priest 2 - level 2 215 core (375 minimum) 26 saurus warriors - full command (my guys are equipped with hand weapons and shields. Does this combine with scaly skin to give 4+ armour?) 13 skinks - blow pipes ( i have a mixture of skink armed with bows, spears/shields and blowpipes, but i can generally mix and match and just tell my opponent what they are) 13 skinks - blow pipes ( same as above) 474 specials (max 750) 5 cold one riders with musician ( figured that these guys could be a fast harassment unit that will be good for hitting the flanks of people stuck in combat with my saurus 185 stegadon with giant bow ( finding it hard to judge the effectiveness of these as don't have much knowledge/practice with the rules. ) I have noticed that life or light is the staple lore for the slann, are the others just not worth considering? Of the two then i am looking at life as i love the image of the saurus with WS/I 10, and the throne of vines looks awesome, especially foe such an important character as the slann. The only thing that I am really attached to is the slann mage priest, though the no. disciplines is variable, so if you do make any suggestions then please keep him in. thanks in advance for any comments, criticisms, etc...
Welcome! I think animosity is half the fun of playing OnG. For your Slann, all of those are good options. In a 1500 point game, Rumination will rock socks, so that's a good one to take. You can also be crafty and take the Plaque of Tepok in place of Focus of Mystery. That way you get 5 spells from whatever lore you choose, and your odds of rolling a double during spell generation are significantly increased. That means you'll likely get to pick the spells you want anyway. And you'll save on points so you can get some more gear for him, like the Plaque of Protection (seeing how you have no TG) or Higher State. Cupped Hands is always good. With Rumination you are more likely to miscast, so that's a good combo. Don't feel like you need to depend on it though. If you go Lore of Life, then you probably won't need it. Double Skink Priests + PoT is good for getting the spells you want from Heavens, like the Comet (pretty much copy+paste the comments on using it with the Slann). I would consider taking Diadem of Power on one of them. The rest of your list looks good. Make sure you don't take on any big units solo with your Cold Ones. They are best used on the flank, like you said. They are also good for fast cavalry and skirmishers. Your Stegadon is best used in the same way, though it can sometimes break smaller infantry blocks when it charges. Yes. And while they are in close combat they will have a 6+ ward save as well. Not necessarily. Light has a good synergy with LM, and Life is good all around. Shadow is another great one to take, as is Death. There are a few threads talking about this throughout the site, so dig around a little bit.
Thanks, thats just the sort of response that I was looking for ! I see your point on the slann. My only problem is that I cannot have both two disciplines and cupped hands and plaque as that would be over the limit. I think that I'll probably go for rumination, cupped hands and plaque of tepoq. (thats 335) I saw the death thread of the slann but I think that the general consensus was that it was underwhelming. I'll hae a look at shadow though, I'll just have to find a thread. This will save me points to give the one of the skink priests the diadem. With this, then should I be looking to do it every turn, or is it more situational? Core seems to be alright. I think at higher points then I'll add more saurus. I'll need to test the stegadon, but everyone here seems to think that it is pretty good, so I think that I'll be fine. So, thanks for the advice. Edit added more detail throughout.
I don't think Death should be ignored though. You can definitely get some VP for killing Generals and BSBs fairly early in the game with that lore. It's hard for any army to recover from an attack like that. I would say the diadem of power is situational. If you have an opponent who has a strong magic phase, probably best to use it liberally. On the other hand, if you roll snake eyes for winds of magic you probably shouldn't use it.
