I posted a list for a tournament I have coming up on here a short while ago and it got shot down quite bad so I am coming back and hoping to redeem the list: Lord: Slann:485 (focus of mystery, focused rumination, becalming cogitation, cupped hands, bane head, dispel scroll, BSB) Heroes: Skink Priest: 435 (Lvl 2, EotG, war drums, plaque of tepok) Scar vet: 124 (LA, Shields, GW, jaguar charm) Core: x12 saurus warriors: 150 (musician, spears) x10 skink skirmishers: 70 x10 skink skirmishers: 70 Speical: x16 temple guard: 270 (standard bearer) x5 chameleon skinks: 60 x3 terradons: 90 x3 terradons: 90 Rare: x1 salamander: 80 (extra handler) x1 salamander: 75 total: 1999 C+C greatly appreciated, thanks!
Hmm, honestly I think this list is sub-optimal for a tournament. Your Saurus unit is too small. Chameleon Skinks and Terradons can fill the same roll. While I really love two units of Terradons; in a 2000 point game I think a single unit of 4 will suffice. Only one Dispel Scroll. Two is really nice in a tournament. I would also suggest a banner in the Saurus unit as well as spears. Attacking from two ranks with two attacks per warrior is huge. What I love about your list: Skink Skirmishers, and two units at that. Perfect. Great disciplines on the Slann and it is hard to argue with your magic item choices. Skink Priest on EotG with the wardrums is fantastic. I like the Scar-Vet setup, just don't count on always being able to fly. Salamanders are great and don't forget that you can pull off the intentional overshot to hit a unit actually engaged in Close Combat. It can backfire and hit your guys too but if you position carefully you can sometimes avoid that. I think a larger unit of Saurus would be very beneficial and act as a sufficient anvil unit. I wish there were a way to get another hammer unit in, like some Cold One Cavalry, but you'd lose some versatility.
Was it this list that you used in the tournament? What did you get shot down by, what armies, lists and tactics caused you trouble? Keep two units of terradons, they are the best thing that we have. If you add a standard to your saurus then they will suddenly stop being disposable - they will be worth 262VPs. I prefer lots of mobile, disposable units. Two scrolls would be nice but I can't see where you could fit it in, it should be ok with 6DD and becalming.
The tournament on the 20th of February. I got "shot down" by the posters on the forums as the list I posted was not well thought through. I actually do have spears on my saurus unit, just forgot to post it . I feel that 2 units of terradons would be better than one, and I see why you see my saurus unit as too small, but I would have to drop the chameleon skinks AND something else to fit in another 6 and a banner and without a hero dedicated to this unit, ( as the scar vet will be leaving when he gets the chance to spread his wings), I feel that this unit would be too vulnerable and give up too many VPs. Having it as only a unit of 12, it will be less of a threat which works to my advantage as if my opponent doesn't shoot at it, I am still getting my 24 attacks in. Thanks you guys very much for your helpful posts. I am going to my LGS today so I will playtest this list as well as the variations you suggested. Edit: Well I played 2 games today and got mixed results. The first was against warriors of chaos I and got stomped. This was against the best player at my LGS so a loss isn't bad but it made me reevaluate my list. It feels like I don't have enough anvil units but I don't know how to fix that problem without hampering my ability to produce throwaway units. I had a plan to rely on my magic, but this plan failed when I miscasted 4 times and my opponent had the infernal puppet. Without magic I don't have much to rely on. My stegadon was taken out by a unit of dragon ogres (damn you strength 7!) and after that I had no real hitting power as my temple guard got chewed on my korne knights that I continually failed to spirit of the forge. My second game was against the always fun O+G's which I won greatly in. My many skirmishers love mass blocks of infantry and my mass of terradons love to chew on war machines. I didn't need any hammers in this game, as my shooting and magic broke this army down. But against a rock lobber and doom diver, my temple guard got whittled down greatly. In neither game did my scar vet get to fly and that was a big disappointment. I was thinking about bumping my saurus up to 18 and giving them full command while switching my scar vet over to a true fighter as it would give me another solid anvil to rely on, but this wouldn't fix my lack of anvils problem. Both of these games also made me question the usefulness of my temple guard unit, as it did nothing but die in both games, but I know that without this unit I would have no anvils and my slann would be in much greater danger. If I added another anvil, what would be the best choice and what would be the most optimal way to achieve the points for it? I was thinking a unit of 5 COR's or maybe a unit of 4 korx but both are rather expensive.
