Your first mistake was that you took an oldblood. Your second mistake was that you took an engine of the gods. You list is very mobile, and could be deployed nearly symmetrically. Consider this, for the cost of those 650 points you spent on heroes, you could buy 3 blocks of saurus like you have. That's a lot of saurus. That's a whole lot of saurus. Are those heroes really going to pay for themselves? Is the improved leadership on that old blood going to help your...saurus? Eh... only skinks I guess. Consider this build instead. Saurus scar veteran w/ light armor w/ great weapon You can get 2 of those for the price of that oldblood, and they'll beat a lot of face and bust chariots on a budget. Plus, you could even put them in with the skink skirmishers to bully around other skirmishers or help you fight off some fast cav or something. Makes sense since the only guys that can improve leadership from the general are skinks anyway. Heck, you could even make one of them the BSB, since he can still use a great weapon if he carries it. Problems with your caster are obvious. Much egg, little basket. Stegadon wants to be in combat, but skink priest really shouldn't be. Consider this build instead: Skink priest w/ lvl 2 upgrade w/ Dispel Scroll Take two of them! they are real cheap, they can hide in a forest and never die, and all their pew spells have infinite range so why tempt fate by riding a lizard into combat? You could even buy a stegadon on it's own for a little more, or just... more saurus, or....4 units of 10 skinks.
Well you are not really all right there Donkeyhotep. Much depends on matchups, what he faces, if there is any restrictions, if he is competetive etc etc. I have recently been playing the old blood for 5-6 games just to mix it up for my opponents, usually i run a slann and a point denying army with lot of strengths, i win games with it but always fun to mix it up. so i tried the old blood on cold one, worked good against some and worse against others, and today i for the first time fielded the Carnosaur, i know i know it is a point sink. I myself always promote people to drop the carnosaur cause its to expensive for what it does, but its a great model and a fantastic character if used properly... if it will take back its points well im not so sure about that but some times he will and when he does you are doing it with a huge smile on your face. But, the EOTG here i agree with you, it is a really nice idea about a model but you dont want to be in combat with the steg if you are using the engine, then you want to do alot of moving around and doing tricks and for this the stegadon isnt optimal at all.... and on top of this your mage is going to get killed. So drop the EOTG and get a normal ancient steggy and 2 level 2 skinks insteed. You are running a pretty fast list and you have 2 solid blocks of saurus warriors, to this you want a BSB, try to fit one into the army Also dont look away from skink cohort, for 50 points you get a fantastic redirect unit with throwing weapons, not to be overlooked.
