8th Ed. 2000 pts, No TG, need advice

    So first off I don't have enough TG to really be effective, so I've decided to try and run a solo Slann and just make him damn hard to kill and just keep him in the background either buffing or killing(don't know which could use help with that) anyway here's my list.

    Lord: Slann BSB, FoM, Rumination, Unfathomable Presence, Cupped hands, Standard of D, Divine Plaque of Prot. For what Lore to take I've decided either Light to buff my own units, or Death to make him a character killer(maybe even Shadow to do a little of both)

    Heroes: Scar-Vet light armour, additional HW, ironcurse icon, Venom of Firefly frog

    Skink Priest on ancient Steg w/ plaque of Tepoc

    Core: 20 Saurus w/ spears and FC

    20 Saurus w/ FC

    Special: 6 Chameleon Skinks

    Rare: Ancient Steg

    2 Salamanders w/ extra handler (they would be separate units)

    That puts me at 1996

    I've also thought about subbing the Skink priest for a unit of 16+2Skrox and two more salamanders so that each hunting pack would have 2 sallies and 8 skinks(and I know in 2k points that goes over the 25% but my gaming club said they'd be cool with it) with this build I'd be at 1990 so I could give my Scar-Vet dragonhelm or something

    Anyway what do you guys think? Could use some advice

    looks very small for an 8th ed army! you only have 2 fighting blocks.

    i like the slann, he's going to be very hard to kill from range, but both light and death, you need to get quite close, make sure he doesnt get charged. maybe trim him down, so if he does die it isnt the end of the world? there's somewhere in the battle reports section of this forum of someone trying that, and i think it worked quite well for him.

    i find it hard to justify EotGs in 8th, i'd definetely be in favour of dropping it. maybe get a regular stegadon instead?


    other than that, looks reasonable to me.

    Really wouldn't recommend taking death on lone slann.
    Also i've recently started to find that 20 saurus warriors don't really need spears it doesn't actually do anything for you other than eliminate your ward. Any decent characters in a unit just finishes off your extra supporting attacks.
    Also with the Slann on the field your EOTG might suffer and might be better to take a chief with war spear and use saved points to bulk out units a bit -points towards Saurus warriors.
    More sallies are always good.
    Chamo skinks are brilliant but i personally use more.
    Things to look out for:
    Horde armies will surround your small number of units.
    Multiple artillery pieces can take down chamo's then focus fire on other parts of your army, this includes dual cannon.
    16 skink in a cohort isn't effective it will die too fast and Krox won't last brilliantly long either.

    Alright well a lot of this makes sense, I think for the Slann I could cut him down on points(but I don't know what to cut) and definitely either shadow or life I think instead of light or death, because like you said he'd be too close.
    The Skrox unit is out, because they have yet to anything for me yet just arent worth the points
    As for the Saurus I definitely need to get some more, but is it better to do 3 blocks of 20 or two blocks of 30? or maybe even 3 blocks of 24? (and yeah Im getting rid of spears they just don't do it for me)
    and I don't know what other units to take. But definitely going to try the warspear and going for another unit of chamo skinks. and love the 4 sallies(might do just three so that I can make it legal, and have one unit with just one and the other two)
    so anything else? and what about the saurus? 3 blocks or 2?

    Alright well this is my new list I feel like it has better potential, let me know what you guys think. Comments and criticism are greatly appreciated as I'm still pretty new to the game in general.
    (So far at my gaming club I am at 2 wins and 1 loss, so really new)


    Slann BSB, FoM, Rumination, Unfathomable Presence, Cupped hands, SoD, Divine Plaque(if I take life I could drop the hands and have almost 50 more points to work with)

    Scar-Vet w/ light armour, Venom of FF, additional HW, iron curse icon

    Skink Chief w/ stegadon warspear on Ancient Steg

    19 Saurus w/ FC

    20 Saurus w/ FC

    10 skink skirmishers

    10 skink skirmishers

    6 Chamo skinks

    2x Sallies w/ extra handler

    2x Sallies w/ extra handler

    So I've thought about taking Life so I could drop Cupped hands and the Scar-Vets magic items to get another unit of 5 Chamo skinks. What do you guys think? Again comments and criticism are greatly appreciated!

    No BSB? surely that is a 1+ in this edition?

    Salnn is both general and BSB and while BSB can still take his normal 100 points of equipment as well as magic banner.
