Hi guys, thanks in advance for your thoughtful input! I've been playing warhammer for years, and after getting somewhat bored with the same routine, decided a new army was in order. Decided to buy the Lizardmen army book on impulse, and surprisingly fell in love with the background and models. I want to collect a themed force, with a low model-count (I don't have much time to model and paint these days), which I can get together quickly, and spend some time making look decent. After months poring over the army book and these forums, I've decided a mostly-cavalry army will make a nice change from my dull 2 game-phases-only dwarves. So, please tell me how this will play out! (I usually play 2000pt games). Lord: Old Blood riding a carnosaur, light army, grt wep. Carnosaur pendant, Glyph Necklace. Hero: Skink Priest, Steg+EoTG, diadem, scroll. Core: Skinks x 10 Skinks x 10 Skinks x 10 Special: Cold One Cav x 10 - Musician/Standard - Sun Standard Cold One Cav x 10 - Musician/Standard - Blessed Totem Terradons x 3 Terradons x 3 That totals out at 1987 points. I'm not sure if I should drop the standards on the saurus and add to the terradon units, or perhaps take another skink priest instead. I was also thinking of just taking a cube of darkness on the priest, that way I can totally ignore one enemy magic phase, and with any luck most units can be in combat within 2 turns. Advice much appreciated!
Have you considered playing something similar to this http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/c...tegoryId=400021&pIndex=1&aId=11600001&start=2? If you plan on keeping the army theme you originally went with, I'd look into other items for your lord. Burning Blade of Chotec is a GREAT cheap magic item while the Scimitar of the Sun Resplendent and the Blade of Revered Tzunki are awesome weapons that allow you to use a shield, giving your lord more survivability. I suggest using units of SCOC 7 strongs and drop the banners, allowing you to either fit in a steggie or another unit of SCOC.
Thanks for the replies! Does a great weapon on a mounted character only give +1 strength?! My other armies are Dwarves and Ogres, so I've never used cavalry before! I think you're right about giving him a magic weapon though, and the scimitar looks like a good deal to me. And I have seen that army, but it strikes me as something that is mostly seen at tournaments, isn't much fun to play against, and is possibly on the fringes of power-gaming. I would like to play with an army that has some more tactical options than that, and an army that people are actually going to want to fight! Are the terradons a good idea? Do they actually work well in games? I was planning to use them mainly as disruption, mach blocking/annoying war-machine crews and lone wizards etc, however I realise that having only units of 3, they're probably quite easy to break...
Terradons are definitely worth it, as they are one of the best utilitarian units in the lizardmen. They can do so many different things for you. And the units of 10 CoC are huge point sinks in 2 units. You would be better off with 2 units of 6 and adding another priest with cloak of feathers for the mobility and a slamander. A salamander would fit well into your army as well since they move 6 and can move and shoot. Also I would make those skinks skirmishers as well.
For your lord, the Scimitar of the Sun Resplendent is a great choice in addition to the Maiming Shield. You'll get 9 attacks once you get frenzied, which brings me to my next point: if the mount has frenzy, it applies to the rider. You don't need the carny pendant on the oldblood. I would definitely make the skinks skirmishers, but other than that it looks pretty solid. Heavy hitting for sure. Just make sure to keep your EotG on the charge as well to utilize the ward save.
