All, It's been a while since I've posted on here and I am currently prepping for a tournament in DFW in March. I'd like to get some feedback on my list if possible. I opted for the Oldblood on Carnosaur this year instead of the Slann, which I took to this same tournament last year. Take a look and let me know what you think. Thanks in advance. Oldblood - Light Armour - Shield - Carnosaur - Halberd Scar Veteran - Light Armour - Shield - Halberd - Cold One 20 Saurus - Full Command 20 Saurus - Full Command - Spears 12 Skink Skirmishers 12 Skink Skirmishers 11 Skink Skirmishers 10 Skinks 16 Skinks w/2 Kroxigors - Standard Bearer - Brave 5 Cold Ones - Full Command Stegadon 4 Terradon Riders 2 Razordon Hunting Packs Army compositions breaks down as follows: Characters: 22% Core: 45% Special: 26% Rare: 7% Magic Items: 0% Total points: 2,247 Lemme know what you think. Thanks again! -Iggy Koopa
I don't know if no magic defense is really smart. If you went against Dark Elves who geared for magic and shooting I can see some real issues with your list. Also, Vampire Counts will love getting to raise units on a single die with no interruptions. I understand not wanting to run a Slann, but you might consider a level 2 Skink Priest on that Stegadon. Also, I prefer Saurus blocks of 18 (6x3) with spears. That can be as many as 24 attacks which does better for combat resolution than that extra rank will. I also prefer the Salamander to Razordons as you get that nifty panic check if they inflict even one wound to a unit. Any comp restrictions or scoring? Which tourney is this? My friends keep bugging me to enter one in either DFW or Austin but I don't want to spend $50 and drive 4 hours to get beaten in the first round
No magic defence, no magic weapons? In a tournament you definitly need some magic defence, a level 2 with diadem and a scroll should work pretty well. If you got the pts you can up the steg to an ancient with a priest on it, but then you need to find room for 150+ pts. No magic weapons is another huge problem, if you run into Etherals you are gonna have problems. A vampire list with 5 wraiths and wind of death is a nightmare for this list. You also have a pretty combat oriented list so making the Scar Vet a BSB pretty vital. Personally I prefer 3x6 like stegadeth, but 20 works as well. I recommend getting spears on both units if you have the models for it, 20 pts is nothing and the possiblity to choose twice the number of attacks is great. Looks very solid, not sure why you have a brave but maybe you just had spare pts. Full command is good if you stick a character in the unit as challange protection. If you plan to place your characters elsewhre you should probably drop the mu & champ for a 6th CoC or something else. I personally prefer Ancients before regular stegs, there is a very big difference between S6 and S5 impacts, if you can get the pts for it. The censensus also seems to be that salamanders are better than razordons, but razordons are still a decent choice tho. Overall the list seems pretty good, except the two giant weaknesses I mentioned in the beginning.
Stegadeth, The tournament is in DFW and it's called the Lonewolf GT. They have over a hundred participants and run it very well. I had an awesome time last year and look forward to going this year again. Also, last year the Dark Elves were the flavor of the month as I played 4 out of 5 DE players. I again didn't have magic items and ended up going 3-2. It was a good time. Thanks for the comments on the list. -Iggy Koopa
Thanks for the tourney name. I just checked their rules and they seem to pair based on how hard an Army is, etc. although there is no official composition scoring (and they do reserve the right to punish people for unsporting armies through their Sportsmanship scoring). Given that pairings are made based on comp you could do ok. Do you know if they always pair or is it based purely on bracket position after the first game?
As everyone else has said, you have absolutely no magic defense. I advice a Lvl 2 priest w/ scroll and diadem is nothing else, get an EotG if you can. No Magic items is good if your trying to keep your points cost down and work in more models for your army but even a cheap 10 point item is something. Don't also forget that you can not add your shield bonus to armour if your fighting with a halberd in CC. I would likely drop your Saurus to blocks of 6x3 w/ spears for good number of attacks and a solid block. I would also drop the champs since your not gonna have any characters in the units. Also, something to think about...but you might consider dropping the standards as well. True they give you +1 CR but they also are 100 VP to your apponent should he break your unit. Not sure about the Brave...but as previously stated I guess you were trying to fill points. But if you do cut points from you list this might be a place to start. Full Command in your CoC if your planning on putting your character in it. Otherwise drop the Champ and, as I mentioned before, perhaps the banner too. I might also trade the steg for the ancient steg. Lots of people prefer Manders to Razordons. It's really personal preference but manders do work well with Terradons behind the paniced unit (insta kill baby!). Perhaps a 1 Mander/ 1 Razor mix?
I would suggest dropping these to 6x3 as mentioned above but also making sure they are all kitted out with spears which given the reduction in numbers is now possible. An additional 12 attacks (unless on the charge) is nothing to be scoffed at. Dropping 4 saurus and also the chaps means you save 6x12 = 72 points - 18 (spears) =54 - you could add shield of mirrored pool and put that scar vet in your unit adding some magic defence, or get 1 dispel scroll....ideas..... (My above math could be wrong lol someone correct it if it's wrong) -Eagle
