Now mostly recovered from his near fatal car wreck (see http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/sad-fate-for-a-great-opponent.4616/ for the action packed story), my main rival, the Chaos Daemon player, has been making a comeback in the Warhammer world as well. Having soundly defeated my borrowed Ogre Kingdom army in our last game, he said he was ready to face "an actual challenge" and requested I bring out the Lizardmen. Little did he know that the Ogres still had some fight left in them, especially after a taunt like that. So...

    The Whale Eater tribe:

Tyrant: Cathay sword, heavy armor, lucky gnoblar, Trickster's helm, Wyrdstone Necklace, Other Trickster Shard, Mawseeker big name

Slaughter master: Gambler's Armor, Hafling Cookbook, Crown of Command

    Butcher: Dispel Scroll, Ruby Ring

Bruiser: BSB, Cathay Sword, Enchanted Shield, Talisman of Endurance, Mawseeker big name

12 Ironguts: full command, Flame Banner
All of the above in one 4x4 unit. Tyrant and IG command in front rank, other characters in second rank.

    9 Bulls

    5 Leadbelchers: Bellower

    Slave giant

    The Nurgle Daemons:

Great Nurgle Daemon: Stream of Bile, Soul Hunger, magic lvl 4, others

    Epedemius

Nurgle Herald: BSB, -2 leadership within 12" banner, Stream of Bile, other stuff

2x20 Plaguebearers: full command, special banners (Epedemius and Herald here, respectively)

    8 Nurgling swarms (one unit)

    2x2 Nurgle Beasts

I wasn't expecting a pure Nurgle list this time, but regeneration actually does make a big difference- hence the Fire banner on my Deathstar unit. The last game it was a Nurgle Herald that got my Tyrant. The opponent wasn't expecting Ogres at all, thinking that my total defeat last time had caused me to give up on them.

Long story short, my Deathstar headed right up the middle, flanked by the giant and the Bulls to either side. We pelted each other with some mostly ineffectual spells, while the Nurgling scouts attempted to sneak up behind us. One of the Beast units wandered out in front for some reason, and my big unit was able to complete a charge to destroy it. The overrun path would have caused us to get flanked for sure, so we restrained to take the charges of the Herald's unit and the Great Daemon to the front. Epedimius and friends failed a very long charge at our flank, but the big daemon and Herald crashed into us to the front, and the remaining Beasts hit in the side.

In his magic phase he tried to get Miasma of Pestilence up on both Greater Daemon and Herald (makes the stats of anything touching them go to '1'; absolutely lethal and casts on 3+). I scrolled one and dispelled the other, so he shut down some of my active Gut Magic buffs. I still had Toothcracker up, though.

My Tyrant challenged and fought the Greater Daemon, who has S8 on the first round from his flail, plus his breath weapon. The Tyrant was T7 from his big name and spell, and so easily survived, wounding the beast. The Ironguts didn't do as well, and lost combat due to the Herald's breath attack and unit's poison (their other banner gave them double res. for poison wounds). Despite being -2 leadership from their BSB, the Slaughter Master's crown made us stubborn at Ld 7, and we held.

The giant was able to join in next turn, thankfully not causing any problems for me, but the Bulls failed their flanking charge. The Tyrant started to show the upper hand in the duel, now that the Daemon's flail and vomit had been expended, and the Ironguts brought down the Herald and some Plaguebearers with their flaming attacks. It wasn't until the giant killed 5 enemies with his thunder stomp that the battle really spun in my favor. The Daemons all made pretty bad instability rolls on top of everything, and so all three units went up in a big green 'poof'.

Epedimius's Plaguebearers got a solid charge off against the giant then, and easily slew him- his corpse, however, toppled directly onto the unit, killing an amazing number of them. The battle ended with a huge, four way melee between the Ironguts, Epedimius & Co., the Nurglings, and the Bulls. Our triumph was inevitable, as the Bulls devoured the Nurglings like stale popcorn, and the Tyrant ran Epedimius through with his blade.

In the end, every Daemon had fallen, and I had lost the slave giant. Both the Ironguts and the Bulls had taken noticeable casualties (the Bulls mainly from some strange terrain feature that randomly fired spells at them). The Leadbelchers never saw combat, and never even got to fire their cannons.

I realize that an 'all eggs in one basket' approach like this is a big risk, but this time it paid off. Since now unit command models take precedence over characters in the front rank, it makes hiding something like the Crown of Command and the BSB safely out of reach possible.

Thanks for reading, and I'd love to hear your feedback.
