Hey all, planning on heading to Denver's Feast of Blades in October and playing in their open tournament. It will be my first foray into competitive tabletop of any kind so do wish me luck. Here's the basics of what i'm looking to run without magical items or disciplines. I'll also be playing this against my buddy's who are into High Elves, Empire, Chaos Warriors, and Ogres. Lord Slann Mage Priest Heroes 2 Level 2 Skink Priests 1 Saurus Scar Veteran with Light Armor, Shield, Great Weapon on a Carnosaur with Bloodroar and Loping Stride Core 2 Blocks of 25 man Saurus with Hand Weapons and FC 2 Units of 11 man Skink Skirmishers 2 Units of 12 man Skink Skirmishers with Patrol Leaders Special 20 Temple Guard with FC Rare Ancient Stegadon with Sharpened Horns and Unstoppable Stampede ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have about 100 points to work with for magic items and Slann disciplines. I was looking to make a nice balanced list and not be playing a WAAC list. I don't expect to win by any means but I don't want to get pushed over either. I haven't faced a lot of the Warhammer races yet so i'm wondering what it is you think i'll struggle against and what I should watch out for? Thanks for your feedback!
This looks to be a fairly light list I'm not going to try and dissuade you from bringing certain units because I am not familiar with what models you have available with the exception of your skinks. If you cut back the units to (10) models and ditch the patrol leader you have essentially another unit of skirmishers which can be more useful than just the larger units. Unless Feast of blades has some sort of comp that discourages you from more than four units of skirmishers I would do that, and if so it's enough points for some chameleons if you have them. I would make your units of saurs 20 and 30 instead of 2 of 25 specifically for the watchtower scenario since the 20 man unit ca start in the tower. You might also want to consider giving the larger unit spears instead for the extra attacks since you will have the extra rank for a while. I like the +1 ld banner on slann BSB but that's already 40 of your extra points and you would likely want to kit him for channelling with the 2 priests and make at least one of them a caddy as well. So the trick would be to find the points; first by trimming back the skink units to ten models and minus the champs and I'd probably get rid of unstoppable stampede on the stegadon. An extra attack on the charge isn't really that good. Hopefully that'll get you where you need to be but you'll probably need to go cheap on the scar vet equipment; dragon helm+dawnstone is a good combo. Ditch the shield; can't use it with a great weapon anyway. Your strategy will revolve around using cover to keep your monsters alive and chaffing with skinks to get your saurus and TG into combat on your own terms. I would probably keep the carnosaur on the flank and get it into combat as early as possibly and maybe go after warmachines since he is your fastest unit. I would also recommend you run heavens on your priests so you have the oppurtunity to get comet and iceshard can shut down warmachines and increase unit survivability somewhat. That leaves the responsibility of buffing your units to the slann so run lore of light or waybe go wandering deliberations for some added flexibility; but again there are more points that need to be found. Last piece of advice would be don't be afraid to put your slann in a skirmisher unit depending on how the deployment is shaping up. It can really disrupt someone when they take for granted that a slann will be with the TG. Best of luck to you. Play smart.
