I just started playing Warhammer again (haven't played since 6th edition, and then only ever played against Brettonia and Wood Elves). Found a group that plays near by. It looks like they field Orcs & Goblins, Skaven (played by a guy who only rolls 6s), Tomb Kings, Vampires, Empire, High Elves, and Deamons. And maybe a Chaos Dwarfs soon. I'm trying to put together a list that is competitive against all these armies and also fun to play and fun to play against. Slann (Mystery,Rumination, Cogitation, Soul of Stone), BSB (Discipline), Plaque of Protection, Cupped Hands, Shrieking Blade Skink Priest w/ Dispell 20 Temple Guard w/ FC & War Banner (Champion has Venom of Firefly Frog) 45 Saurus w/ Musician & Standard 2 x 10 Skink Skirmishers 2x6 Skink Chameleons 28 Skinks & 3 Kroxigors w/ Musician & Standard 4 Terradon Riders w/ Brave 3 Salamanders w/ extra crew (unit of 2, unit of 1) That comes to 2496 points. I lost pretty hard in my first game last week against a fluffly Vampire army. I used Light Magic. I think I'm going to switch to Life for my next game. I was running 50 Saurus and 3 naked Kroxigors but the Krox all died before getting a hit in combat so I started pulling out Saurus to beef up the Krox with Skinks. The Champion in the TG is there to block challenges to the Slann and to get a magical attack because I've seen a lot of Spirit Hosts (I think) on the tables. (Same goes for the Shrieking Blade on the Slann) I also reduced my Chameleons from 2x10 to 2x6 to help make room for the Terradons. I only included the Brave because I had enough points left over and nothing else to throw them at. Model wise, I also have a bunch of Skinks, a few Saurus (like 8), 2 Stegadons, 10 Cold One Riders, a hero on a Carnosaur, a few more Priests and another Kroxigor and another Terradon. Is it worth it to invest in more Saurus to eventually replace the Skink/Krox unit? So, how does this look? Any suggestions?
A well balanced list. I have some very MINOR suggestions. First to cause Fear to an enemy unit, the Fear causing unit has to be in base-to-base contact so the Shrieking Blade wielded by the Slann will not help the Temple Guard block cause Fear. Since Temple Guard led by a Slann are immune to Pscyhology anyway the Skrieking Blade will not immunize them to Fear since they have that already. I'd shift those 5 points to the Iron Curse Icon instead which should help out since most of your foes have a decent amount of artillery and Temple Guard tend to attract the lions share of heavy shooting. I'd consider adding a few more Temple Guard and dropping a few Saurus since 45 is a very large unit for Saurus and 20 Temple Guard is medium sized at best (though if you are using Life, 20 is probably okay since TG receive most Regrowth spells). If you want to trim out a small number of points, the extra handlers are less important for Salamander teams of two or three than they are for single Salamander teams (since a pair of Salamanders can operate just fine with one handler). The Terradon brave won't add much for ten points either. If you don't have a strong desire to save 20 points, I wouldn't worry about it, the upgrades won't make or break your game really. I'd consider taking a skink brave for whichever skink unit your priest is going to join. The skink brave probably won't save your priest's life but can at least prevent your opponent from getting bonus points. If yoru skink priest is forced into close combat, a unit champion can declare a challenge against him, kill the skink priest (because he fights as poorly as a regular skink) and then get the bonus points for an underdog victory (that's happened to me once and it still stings).
