Hi All Heres my potential 3000pt army list. I know im going to get slated for using the COC but ive got the models around so might aswell use them Lords Slann, BSB, Cupped Hands X4 Ancient Disciplines - Focused Rumination, Focus of Mystery (Life) Higher State of Conscious & Becalming Cognition Lords = 495pts Hero’s Saurus Scar Veteran, Blade of Tzunki, Dragon Helm, Light Armour, Shield = 143pts Skink Priest Lvl 1, Dispel Scroll, Talisman of Protection – 15pts – 105pts (Lore of Heaven) Hero‘s = 273pts Core 35 Saurus with spears,Musician and Standard – 438pts (6x6) 36 Saurus with spears, Musician and Standard – 450pts (6x6) 10 Skirmish Skinks -70pts 10 Skirmish Skinks - 70pts x2 (5x2) Core = 1028pts Special 20 Temple Guard & Standard & Musician, Champion, Iron Curse Icon, Sun Standard of Chotec – 400pts (6x4) X6 Cold One & Musician & Standard – 240pts (6x1) X10 Chameleon Skinks – 120pts (5x2) X10 Chameleon Skinks – 120pts (5x2) Special Total = 880pts Rare x4 Salamander, x4 Extra Handlers (x2 Salamander Units) Rare Total = 320pts Grand Total = 2996pts
I would break your units of Saurus up into 3 units of 6X4. Your units (6x6) beyond the 3rd rank are just soaking up hits. More units = More attacks. I may even go down to 2 units and get a few more heros. After playing the DE's and facing thier cheap unit champions (which arn't unit champions but mini characters), I found you need something to respond with and I believe the way to go is with cheap Scar-Vets. I would also go down to 14 TG and get a magical banner on the cav. On the Skink Priest, I would change your Dispel Scroll to the Cube of Darkness. Or take the Cube with a Dispel scroll is you can. The Cube wipes the magic phase along with dispelling. You might as well get more bang for you buck. Remember these are only one man's opion. These are things I'm test playing and working threw. i'd have to agree with dundaz on the more characters. anyone in the new edition with any sense will go very hero heavy due to the new army distribution rules. your saurus units are way too big. i'd go for 2 units of 30 at most, but unless your expecting to take heavy casualties before you reach combat, then tone down the size. your cavalry are a good size. since heavy cavalry have almost been nerfed, than they will make a good flanking unit. overall good list. it has potential, but you definitely need more scar-vets.
Cheers for the replies everyone. Ive altered my list to make it more flexiable & legal:scratchhead: Ive left the COC in as i like the models and have got them anyway Lords Slann, BSB, Cupped Hands X3 Ancient Disciplines - Focused Rumination, Focus of Mystery (Life) & Becalming Cognition Lords = 445pts Hero’s Saurus Scar Veteran, Burning Blade of Chotec, Dragon Helm, Iron Curse Icon, Light Armour, Shield = 128pts Hero‘s = 128pts Core 23 Saurus with spears, Musician and Standard – 294pts (6x4) 24 Saurus with spears, Musician and Standard, Champion – 318pts (6x4) 24 Saurus with spears, Musician and Standard, Champion – 318pts (6x4) 10 Skirmish Skinks – 70pts 10 Skirmish Skinks – 70pts x2 (5x2) Core = 1070pts Special 20 Temple Guard & Standard & Musician, Champion,Banner of Eternal Flame – 365pts (6x4) X8 Chameleon Skinks – 96pts (4x2) X8 Chameleon Skinks – 96pts (4x2) X6 Cold One Cavalry, Musician, Standard – 240pts (6x1) X1 Stegadon – 235pts Special Total = 1032pts Rare x4 Salamander, x4 Extra Handlers (x2 Salamander Units) Rare Total = 320pts Grand Total = 2995pts
The second list looks a lot better. You don't need to post point values for each unit though; we all have the book and know what stuff costs. The overall point size of the army is all that's needed. Anyway, watch out for fire resistant/immune enemies with all the flaming attacks you're packing. The Dragon Helm is popular, it's easy for Dwarves to fireproof their characters, and if you fight High Elves their Dragon Princes and Tyrion character are totally immune to fire. It's worth it if you plan to face a lot of Treemen, Hydras, Trolls, and such however. I also agree with you keeping the larger size Temple Guard unit, as it will be a priority target for the enemy, and you won't always succeed in resurrecting them with your spell. Your Slann is the heart of your army- don't take a chance!
I disagree-seeing the pts of a unit is helpful, as with all those upgrades, its hard to judge it just looking at the unit size. Being able to see the pts of the unit can help one make changes to the force. If I see "5 Cold One Cav, FC, razor banner" The unit looks reasonable. When I see "5 Cold One Cav, FC, razor banner-270" I can see that the unit has a very bloated cost, and could be traded in for something more effective, like saurus, or a stegadon. Just my opinion.
That's a valid perspective. I guess I'm taking it for granted that the point cost for units is evident if you know what an individual model or upgrade costs; I just find the totals distracting. The comment was also inspired by this, from the Army List posting rules (http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/army-lists-rules-remember-no-individual-points-values.1920/): I could be taking that out of context, and do see where you're coming from. At any rate, let's get back to dissecting the list...
Personally I think its a good list but I think with you Slann and Veteran I would get an Old blood on a carnosaur (the worry with this is you make him a target) but that can be a good thing they are shooting at him instead of your hard hitting saurus. and with the vet I would put two level 1 skinks in there you will still have your casting dispelling strength but the list is more hard hitting. But this is my opinion.
