Hey guys, my local game store is hosting a fantasy escalation league starting at 500 points. I'm thinking about signing up, to give me an excuse to paint more and actually become more familiar with the game. Here is my planned list so far: 1x Scar Veteran (Great Weapon, Light Armor, Dragonhelm, either Luckstone or Ironcurse) 14x Saurus Warriors (Banner, Spawn leader, Scar Vet leading the charge) 10x Skinks (Blowpipes) 1x Bastiladon (Solar Engine) 499 Points It's a relatively basic list. I'm still trying to decide whether to go Scar Vet/Bastiladon or Priest/Ripperdactyls. I'm leaning towards the Bastiladon because he's more predictable, though weaker as a caster. Thoughts? Thanks!
No it's actually quite the oppposit. Blowpipes are more situational due to various To Hit penalties, where as javelins can both move and shoot without any penalty. In the long run you'll get more shots through with javelins, not to mention javelins being better protected due to the shield and hand weapon.
Good point, I did a bit more research and I think I'm liking javelins more, especially being a bit inexperienced; they seem more reliable and easy to use. I already have three blowpipe Skinks assembled, but now I may go ahead and do 10 Javs.
It's only a minor thingt though so no worries. Blowpipes are great if you should find yourself in a place, close to an enemy where you doesn't need to move. That would make you hit on 5+ (due to multiple shots), but firing after having moved would make you hit on 6+ and firing at long range (dat 12" range) after having moved gets you into the silly 7+ range where poison no longer works. All with blowpipes of course. On the other hand javelins can move and fire freely and basically only takes penalty for long range shots. This means that you can dance more around the enemy with them because once you're at close range it's 4+. I hope this helps.
I was curious though; is it true that it is optional to use your multiple shots with the blowpipes? I.e. if you are firing at long range, you could opt to just fire single shots and hit on 6s w/poison?
IMO theres no comparison between blowpipes and javs. Javs are better in all situations, hands down. It's the shields on top of the move to hit. It ends up being massively better.
Yes it is optional, you don't have to use the multiple shots, but can take a single shot without that penalty. (BRB-73 Multiple Shots)
But if you go with single shot you have lost the only thing with blowpipes that are better than jav. And like Pinktaco says, blowpipes are very situational. I agree with Putzfrau in this. /Crillaz
