After the 1500 vs. Empire, my buddy and i decided to test his new elves out. I took 20 Saurus + Command SV with spell shield (MR 1) -- (in the Saurus) 10 skinks 1 Sala ------ I would rather had a priest but didnt have the model with me, and after wrecking him severely (see 1500 vs empire) wanted to give im a break. He took 15 Swordmasters 15 Spears 1 Lev 1 mage 1 great eagle ------- no commands - no banners (WHAT?) He picks Shadow as his lore and gets....you guessed it.... pit of shades. The best spell in the game vs a large Saurus Block. We just deployed str8 across from each other, no shenanigans. I had saurus in the middle skinks right, sala left. He deployed his cster between his 2 units and the eagle to my right. I win the 1st turn roll. Phew. My Turn. I march everything. Shooting: My Jav skinks are JUST in range and i kill 3 swords. My Sally rolls a super sweet 8 and I kill 5 spears (10 left). YES! His turn. He declares a charge on the skinks with the swords. its' 13". I decide to stand and shoot, killing 3 more (9 left). he rolls 10 and gets the charge. Damn. He flies the eagle overtop and in behind the skinks and slightly to the right flank of the Saurus. Magic: He goes to cast Pit of shades on the Saurus, succeeds, and I dispel it (yay 1 extra for dice - MR 1). CC: the swords obviously destroy the Skinks so bad. But he elects to overrun instead of reforming (he is kinda noob). The 3 remaining skinks flee through eagle, passing their dangerouys terrain tests. He overruns the skinks but is now like 10" away from my Saurus and facing the wrong way. My Turn. I move up the sala to 10" away from the spears, and I reform the Saurus to face the swords the eagle is in my flank but i care not. Sala burns another 3 of the spears (7 left). His turn. Eagle charges my saurus in the flank. Spears charge the Sala, which holds--he had no rank bonus and no banner, so i thouhgt the sala could hold for a turn and maybe fear would come into play for a win in combat. He reforms his swords to face my saurus. Magic: no pit cause of Combat LOL.. CC: Eagle stomps a saurus and the other 3 saurus in base contact maul the eagle to death. poor eagle. I still wouldve won by 4 cuz he cant disrupt with a single eagle (right?).
WOW IT IS REALLY ANNOYING HOW WHEN YOU TYPE A VERY LONG MESSAGE THE DIALOGUE BOX CONTINUALLY SCROLLS UP SO YOU CANT SEE WHAT YOUR TYPING. anyone else have that problem? solutions? anyway. CC: the spears pass their fear and do a wound to the sala, which retalites by stomping a spearman. the Handlers whiff. My turn: I charge the swords (9" away), and make it in easily. CC: the spears whiff, and so does the sala and handlers. the Swords chop down 3 Saurus, but my Scar vet chops down 2 swords and the Saurus take another 3. He loses the combat by 6. He runs and I run him down. His turn. Magic: He Irrestibles a large template Pit on the Saurus but it scatters away (phew.) His caster takes a detonation and s10 hit and wound. CC: the spears whiff, the Sala kills 2 and the skinks get 1. The spears run and the salamander runs them down. It is now 4" away from his caster. My turn: I charge the caste, who holds. I quck reform the Saurus and move them up. but their still 20" away from the caster (who is by the table edge). CC: His caster rolls 2 wounds on the sala which dies, the handlers just disapear right? His turn: He Irrestibles a large template Pit on the Saurus. It hits, killing the SV and all but 2 saurus only the musician and banner survive. He miscasts himself into another dimension, however, and has no-one left. The Bearer and Musican wrote an epic ballad about it called "Pit of Sadness".
"Pit of Sadness" On that fateful day, when it was we lay, to waste those Asur, did disaster occur. For one elf was left, In Shadow he crept, lurking, but deft, and he never slept. he toiled with his magicks, those dastardly tricks, and from the grey lore, came power as never before. the winds of magic blew strong, and all went so wrong. As he opened a pit, with such screaming within it. We tried to jump out, We raised up a shout, But it was too late, and many, so many, fell to their fate. But the old ones are not, so cruel as is thought. They opened a portal, and banished the immortal. And so it was that it passed, with a jerk and a gasp. That so many fne Saurus, have passed on before us.
Love the ballad jajajaja And on both counts right The handlers just disappear and the Eagle wouldnt disrupt the ranks! Your Salamander did some very nice damage! I havnt had any luck with them in small fights (a scatter of 10 will usually miss pretty bad when the enemy only has three ranks ) Having his units torn apart like that before getting into combat is very nice, especially since Elves have such small amounts of troops to begin with!
That poem is beyond awesome! Seriously, great work, and I hope your future battles inspire you to write more. One thing I noticed, and maybe I read this wrong, but it seemed like the Saurus got another dispel dice from the magic resist item. Now in 8th, MR just gives you a ward save bonus to spell damage (so MR1 gives you a 6+ ward, and so on), but since the "Pit of Sadness" doesn't allow saves it unfortunately won't help us. Again, maybe I interpreted your post wrong though. So, the battle ended with just three Lizardmen left standing... Too epic for words!
Once again, sweet poem. And with that out of the way i must say that MR no longer gives extra anything to dispelling, it instead gives a ward save against wounds caused by spells, in the case of MR 1 and saurus having no base ward that would be a 6+.
wow. I def interpreted MR wrong, which might have changed the game. not the first time in warhammer tho. lol. good call guys, I'll keep that in mind. thanks on the poem, it was done in the moment. not my best work, but inspred nonetheless. do Sala shots scatter? cuz whoa, if they do, you mean artillery dice right, arty 10 shoots over (MOST TIMES), right?
it doesn't scatter as such, place the template in front of the sally then the artillery dice roll is how far forward the template moves. a misfire means the sally eats D3 handlers, thats why i always take the extra one in case he eats all 3 in one go.
thats what I thought, but the monster reaction isnt so bad. 1-2 Stupidity 3-4 Unbrakable and shoots. 5-6 Frenzy and Hatred! None of that is TOO bad. Even on a ten the Sally's usually hit a few, and it takes a really bad trip of rolls to make em stick where thay are (3-4) WHICH I FEEL IS WORST.
Yea, i find the best distance away to be is about 8 inches, that way your are just about certain to hit regardless of artillery roll, except for misfire of course.

-I like em at 9-10" that way they can successfully flee. But 8" if they are on the flanks for Sheezy.
i can understand that. i tend to always operate sallys on the flanks. march 12" first turn and try and get this sort of thing going: sally-----enemy-----enemy-----sally
I had terrible luck with my salamanders in my 1k point battle :/ They shot from 10 and a half inches away and got a 2 for both of them... Flames exploded right in front of the unit, literally by millimeters.. Next turn from a nice 8 inches they both roll 10's... Killing a total of 3 from the small end of the template that barely touched the unit :/ Sigh... Flanks are much better for shooting from And your 'sandwich' theory for Sallies is something I've never thought of Mixer! A very interesting idea to try )
seriously its great, i called it "The Oven". one time the enemy (orcs) fielded 3 big boyz unts. but due to my 2 big saurus units and my TG/slaan unit oppsite him he kept his formation in preperation for a head on collision. as a result my sallys marched into position on either side of his line as shown above. I really couldn't miss, except for misfires of course which, touch wood, don't seem to happen very often. in 2 rounds of this somewhere in the region of 50 orcs died to this, while my saurus and TG/slaan smiled as they slowly trundle forward thinking "hmmmm, roasted orc, YUM!" Well worth trying, usually they are accompanied by chamo skinks as well just to prevent some other unit charging them and stopping The Oven from turning up the heat.
