Hey guys! Long time no see. I'm getting back in the mindset of playing Warhammer, and my local shop holds a 600 point escalation league, and I'm thinking of getting into it. Here is the list I have planned right now: 19x Saurus Warriors w/Spears, standard, champ 1x Scar Veteran w/Great Weapon, Light Armor and Trickster’s Helm (with Saurus) 10x Skink Skirmishers 1x Bastilodon (Solar Engine) 600 Any input? Thinking of removing some of the equipment from the Vet and Saurus unit to add more Skirmishers/Chameleons... Thanks!
Now I'm pretty new, but I've played some low point games, and here are my thoughts on your set-up: I like the Scar-Vet as your general in the saurus block. I am less keen on the priest at this point level. I'd prefer to take something with more punch and greater reliability. I don't have the book in front of me, so I don't know what the point value is on the plaque, but I'd drop the priest and sally. With those points I'd add a Bastiladon and then bolster the ranks of your saurus a bit. Maybe even toss some armor on your hero. Drop the magic sword and pick up a great weapon. The bastiladon will give you a decent damage spell that can't miscast, and you can chuck all your dice at it every turn. Additionally he can tarpit weaker units just fine, and if he's close to your saurus block, he'll boost their initiative a bit. (Honestly, I think this is one of the best new choices we have for low-point games.) Anyways, that's how I'd run a 600 point game. But that's just one tactical build among many!
You're probably right about removing the priest; though I like having those dispel dice, I will have to remove him anyways to stay under the 25% heroes/lords rule. That sucks though, because it's a model that I already have. xD Working on a update.
Plaque of Tepok was pretty cheap in the old book. I don't think it's available in the new book, though. Fleetfiend, are you playing with the new book for this army? If you are, you should def try to work a Bastiladon into your list for all the reasons MHK Pathfinder said. And if you're using the old book, you might still be better off dropping the priest for more skinks (it'd be nice if you could fit 2 units of 5 and deploy them pincher style) If you do keep the Priest, I would put him in your unit of skinks if your opponent has war machines, archers, or magic missiles (for the look out sir), otherwise he should be fine running around on his own. You can make that decision during deployment. As for the Salamander, I think it's pretty good in a low point game. It's probably going to get shot at, but every time it is targeted that means your Saurus are not getting picked away. And if the Salamander lives long enough to get a good shot or two off then you can really weaken whatever block of infantry your opponent has before you bring the pain with your Saurus!
Updated. That is NOT very models. I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not. xD I really wasn't sure if Plague of Tepok was still available or not. I thought I was crazy when I couldn't see it in the book, but I've been seeing (what I think are) 8th edition lists that have them. But yeah, I'm going to be playing with the new book. ^_^
