So I am intrested in starting warhammer and one of the armies I am consdiering starting with is the LM. There are plenty of reasons as to why I should take them, but I did have a couple questions about them that I would like to ask the wise old ones about before I make the investment. One major concern I had was the types of armies. It seems to me that all the armies are Slann, scar vets, engine, saurus, skinks, terradons, stegadon, and then maybe one other unit. There is also the sink horde, but that doesnt intrest me. So I guess my question is that in the army book is the a great deal of variety for lists. Because I know that I would like to mix up my list from time to time and not have the two options of magic heavy with a slann or combat heavy with a oldblood ( I know there is skink heavy but again that doesnt appeal to me).My other question was color scheme. It seems every color scheme I see is blue or green, no variety. So are there other good color schemes for the lizards besides these two (I dont want my army to be awful looking after all). So all comments are appreciated!!!

    Greetings, welcome to the forum!

I would be surprised to see Slann, engine AND scar vets in the same list. That is a huge investment in characters at 2k. Around half the army, more if you give the Slann some temple guard.

Certainly as you say the two most common builds are magic heavy with a slann leading, and combat heavy with an old blood leading. You can easily go to a 2k battle without a lord, and lead with a scar-vet or even a skink chief, this will give you more points for the rest of the army and more variety. You can also try for a faster list, and take several units of cold ones, the slowest thing in your army can be M6 with skinks.

You may not like the idea of a skink horde, but skinks are very valuable to even a balanced list for their cheap support.

Colour schemes, yeah blue is the most common. But you can literally paint them any colour you like. Colder colours and more natural colours tend to work well since they are lizards afterall.

    Good luck with it!

Thank you for the response strewart. First let me say I proably misworded what I said about skinks. Its not that I dont see their uses, I know they are there for baiting, fleeing and then charge combo, and taking down large targets with their poison (plus some other functions I dont know about) so I do intended to use them. Its just sometims people write a list with only skinks or about 80% of the army is skinks mainly in the core spot and character skinks aswell. This is what I did not want, I didnt want an all skink army. And for the character selection, I have seen quite a few lists (two of them were GT lists that placed in the top 15) that had that selection, and at the 2250 level it seems much more common (which was alot of the lists I see). Not to try and discredit your points, as a silent browser of this forums I see your posts a lot and they are quite informative and helpful.

And as for list varients, so would the list your refering too as in a faster LM list, be mainly coldones skinks and mounted characters, because that seems like it be quite a fast and hard hitting list on the charge, any other kinds of lists though?

First you have to figure out why you are playing. I think most people tend to look for the "optimal" types of lists, so that they have the best chances at tournaments. This is when you tend to see things be repeated, and most people seeking advice about lists on forums are looking to optimize for competitive play.

You can really go nuts with different types of lists when you aren't concerned with maxing out on the optimal choices, but you will wind up with something that is not necessarily super-competitive. The same can be said of every army book though.

A few list types off the top of my head...

    Cheesy
Magic Spam - Slann fully tooled, EotG(s), Defensive blocks
Jurassic Park - 4+ Stegadons, Skink chief with the magic lance, some support units
Air Raid - Big units of Terradons, dropping tons of rocks

    Balanced/Competitive (the usual suspects)
Slann with a flying skink priest helper, scar-vet BSB, the usual unit choices
Oldblood on Carnosaur, EotG for magic defense, combat blocks, support units
Multiple Medium Units - DonkeyHotep posted this a while back, comes with mittens

    Interesting/Fluffy
Horn of Kygor - Oldblood with the horn on a cold one, 3 scar vets (1 BSB) on cold ones, couple of units of Cold One Cav, Couple terradons, supported by skink blocks with kroxigors
Skink horde - You get the idea
Slann of Shadows - Big TG unit with Slann, jaguar standard, BSB, war banner, always march drum, Slann takes lore of shadow for movement. Rest of the army supports the kill block.

The best thing to do is first figure out the sort of style of play you want, and then build your list around it.

My lizards are dark red/red... For reference, a link.

What kind of army you wanna play, in my opinion, always comes down to what you like.
I personally like Saurus and cold one riders and also play those, with some added magic support. (Skink priests and EoTG's)
A very fun list but ya, that's me.

Caneghem listed some various lists actually, there are more versions of those lists though but they all fall under the same category in the end.

    Cheers!

As far as painting goes, its all your choice of style. I went more for green myself, but my more dinosaur creatures are much more varied. Best part about painting lizardmen is whose to say exactly what they should look like? Have they ever seen a dinosaur? probably not. google pictures for reptiles, amphibians, and dinosaurs. Thats where I found my inspiration.
