    Guys,

I am new to Lizardmen but have acquired an army, it consists of -

    1 x slann
    1 x oldblood
    2 x skink priest (1 with feathers)
    26 x temple guard
    30 x saurus
    32x skinks (2 x 10 and 1 x 12 due to colour schemes)
    8 x COC
    6 x chameleon skinks
    3 x salamanders.

    My questions are -
What is the best Lord / Hero setup to run with here?
Is it worth making my slann the BSB, if so what magic banner is best and or items?
What items are good for the old blood and skink priests?

Is a slann with 2 x skinks priest too much casting??
Would I be better with 1 x skink and 1 x scar vet?

Any advice with this army would be much appreciated.

FYi, im a beginner so wont be doing any tournaments too soon, I just want to learn my trade and not suck too much untill I know whats what.

    Thanks in advance.

Need to ask a few questions first to get to the answers for you.

    1. How many points are you aiming for here. Are you going to start with 1000 point games, or does your intended group play at a higher point level.

    2. Do your saurus warriors come with hand weapon and shield, or spears.

    3. Do the skinks have javelin and shields or blowpipes.

    As for your questions:

    1. There really isn't a "best" setup for the lord/hero members of a list. All depends on what type of list you are trying to build.

    2. It is usually worth making your slann the BSB as he is the hardest to kill. Doesn't need to take a magic banner though. That usually comes down to points left over.

    3. For magic items, the saurus characters usually get an armour with ward save from the armour list. Crown of command is nice also. Skink priests get a dispel scroll.

    4. A Slann with 2 priests is usually overkill on the casting front. I only take two skink priests if I am running without a slann.

So get back with the answers to the top questions and we can go from there.

    Welcome to the jungle.

    Thanks for the reply,

    Answers are as follows -

The group I will play with usually runs 2500 point armies.

Saurus are shields and hand weapons.

    Skinks all have blow pipes.

In answer to lords/heroes, would I be better for 1 x slann, 1 x skink priest and 1 x scar vet, or 1 x slann and 2 x scar vet?

Can I run an old blood with a slann? (old blood on foot).

Sorry for all the q's, trying to get the basics dialled so when I turn up to play aginst these dudes I dont look like a total moron.

Given the army you have, you should be able to field just about all of it at the 2500 point level and have an extremely well balanced force. As Sir Kently has indicated, the 2nd skink priest is really overkill since you will want the slaan doing the vast majority of the casting so just a plain scroll caddy should be fine.

With regard to fielding an old blood with the slaan, my advice at this point level of game would be not to as 25% of 2500 is 625 points max to spend on a lord choice. The slaan is the key to the army for leadership and magic (both offence and defence) while the old blood is simply a combat character. A typical slaan that is also the BSB with 3 disciplines and a magic item or two will generally run close to 500 points, leaving 125 for an old blood which doesn't even get him on the board naked :D If the old blood is fielded with magic items and equipment, some significant sacrifices will have to be made on the Slaan to accommodate. I think you would be far better off going with two scar vets to beef up the combat power since they will cost about the same as a fully kitted old blood but will provide much more flexibility. With the models available, you may consider using one of the COC as a scar vet proxy and the other scar vet on foot inside the saurus or TG.
