Hi, Had a horrible tournament with my neighbor and his wife yesterday at 1500p. It was the first time i've ever played against high elves and i've read quite a bit of how overpowered they would be and all that. But i've always had faith in my lizards to pull through for me in the end . Sadly it didn't happen yesterday . Anyway, i'd love to ask for some pointers to what kind of game i should play. The list i was using was a pretty experimental list since this was a small 1500 tournament against dwarf and high elves and we usually play 2500p against O&G so... 30 saurus hw/s, banner/musician 16 saurus hw/s, banner/musician 2x10 skink skirmishers, blowpipes 2x5 chameleon skinks 3 Terradon riders Slann, Focus of Rumination, Plaque of Tepok, Divine Plaque of protection, Lore of Light Scar vet, lgt arm, Gw, Ironcurse icon. Goes in big saurus regiment. Scar vet, lgt arm, Gw, Lichebone pendant, Pidgeon pluck. Goes in big saurus regiment. Skink Chief on terradon Totally not the best list possible since i didnt include my 2 Salamanders i usually play with. The problem i had mainly was the White Lions When they just totally obliterated my awesome saurus . Skinks could do nothing to them with their higher armor save against shooting and with 18 rerollable ws 5 str 6 atks, how the heck do i anvil or counter that? I thought the phoenix guard and swordmasters were their dangerous special . I know that Sallies can probably take out a few with their -3 to armor save... And believe me they'll be there next time but are there any other tricks? Well magic, would have banished the hell out of him if my slann didn't get tired of life and miscasted himself to death in turn 3... (first and last time i played without cupped hands). The following game against the dwarf i totally won though (thank you lore of light) .
To lessen white lion damage use Pha's Protection and Iceshard Blizzard to make them hit a lot less, also getting to initiative 10 takes away their re-rolls.
I know how much white lions hurt. 33 of them. In 2k. The problems really arise when they have banner of the world dragon and a noble/white lion character i can't remember the name of. This ruled out magic. Concentrated repeater bolthrower fire ruled out my sallie. And losing 20 saurus warriors, 5 cold ones and my allies goblin warboss in one round of combat ruled out victory. Main aim for large units immune to magic is to concentrate on the rest of his army with CC and hope to gang up on them afterwards. For smaller units a few well placed skinks will whittle down the unit rapidly.
Pha's protection and Lightspeed work just fine here as they aren't cast on the lions but on your unit they're fighting, all of a sudden the lions hit on a 5+ with no re-rolls.
Went up to him yesterday and demanded a rematch . Changed list to 2x19 saurus 2x10 skink skirmishers Salamander extra handler Salamander extra handler Regular Stegadon scar vet, gw lght arm scar vet, gw lght arm Slann Focus Rumination Ethereal bsb Plaque of Tepoq Lore of Life He had pretty much the same as last time. 2x10 archers 20 spearmen 18 white lions lvl 2 mage some noble bsb some lord 8 Silver helms 1 repeater bolt thrower Went alot better, sniped out white lions completely with salamanders, he had 3 left when he arrived at my first saurus . But then he was extremely unlucky with the bolt thrower as well as unlucky with dices in regular... No dwellers hit whatsoever :S. But still, t8 saurus is a friggin bitch . Food for thought. Never play without Salamanders, it just makes you look stupid.
I'm having problems with high elves too in the local escalation league. At 1500 he's got two 15 man bricks of seaguard, 21 sword masters and 21 white lions, lv 2 beasts caster and a bsb noble. I'm running sally x 2, 25 saurus x 2 8 c. skinks, and a life slann in a small TG brick. Honestly I'm not sure how to deal with it. I feel like he can out-shoot me if I hang back and that he can out fight me if I close. My main thought is another list with lots of skinks (to get in the way and put at least a few wounds on those sword masters).
I would advise you to add another salamander and another group of chamo skinks and switch lore so that you get light instead. Light deals with all of their strength while salamanders are hard to kill with shooting. The chameleons are anoying, can take out machines easily and might be able to march-block some of the times. With a buff like speed of light on one of your saurus regiments you will outfight him any day. The salamanders will also reduce his armour save to close to nothing while wounding loads. So stay back and whatch your skinks and salamanders dance around his army while hitting him hard with magic. Thats what I would do.
High elves imo should be one of the easiest opponents for a lizardman army to face. We have core that can stand up to their elite infantry and as others have mentioned the lore of life will negate alot of their bonuses. We have the exact tools for the job for dealing with white lions and anything low toughness with medium armour. skirmishing skinks with blowpipes, chamo skinks and salamanders. All 3 of those units will ruin the day of any horde of white lion and if you find yourself not in the right place to slowly run around them with those units then just avoid them? points deny is a valid tactic.
I hear you guys, and the salamanders have been my only real answer to him so far. I'll try holding back longer in our next game.
I really don't think HE are super tough right now and I believe we match up against them very well. If they bring Teclis or Book of Hoeth with Death we could have a rough time though.
Lore of Light is the solution to all your problems Remember to use the Slann's ability to kill of 6's from their casters.
white lions has an extra +2 armor save against shooting... thats a 3+ save against our shooting except sallies which is a 6+ . I think its really scary depending on the magic to work to win combat against them... if you get one shitty magic phase you'll have at least 10~15 dead saurus in one round which usually will not be a good thing... i camp alot since their shooting aint that impressive against our t4 core with great armor, run around with sallies doing their thing go for life and hope for an irresistable dwellers here and there .
Yeah, I'd try camping, get the salamanders firing and start magicing his tougher units before they get to you. Once the white lions are gone, the rest doesn't have that great a save and can be countercharged.
Underestimate the Asur at your peril. Depending on who you play, you could either smash them (inexperienced general) or have a very very hard time. Indeed I recently tried a lvl 4 mage with book of Hoeth and lore of life, the 6th spell absolutely smashed my opponent and put me in a very commanding position both tactically and in terms of victory points. It didn't even roll that well. Depending on size, it will also take only one or two rounds from bolt throwers at a unit of saurus to make him no longer fear them. Definitely the t4 and decent armour of saurus puts them in good stead, but remember even the humble spearman with s3 is able to fight in four ranks so the massive amount of attacks striking first and usually getting rerolls to hit will hurt.
I am not saying they are pushovers, they are basically middle of the pack. They are currently 8th on Rankings HQ. I actually got worked by them twice this weekend. The guy I play most often got best HE general at North Star and is currently ranked 8th in the US for HE generals. Bolt Throwers shouldn't be a problem. Chamo Skinks tear them up. Spearmen do have a lot of attacks, but I don't think they get too scary until they get Okkam's Mindrazor on them.
Yeah fast skirmishers have always been my biggest problem as a HE player. I can often shoot at them since bolt throwers have great BS, but with -2 to hit chamos that would be a lot harder. Expect the odd magic missile to target the cham skinks, they are that dangerous. Yes spearmen would only cause a real problem for saurus when they have a bit of support. Like I said, if they are weakened at range first that helps a lot. Spearmen are also often joined by a noble with great weapon, which still strikes first, and really helps them tip the scales against most units. Additionally they can be well supported by lion chariots, which are amazing even when not charging and should definitely be a high priority to destroy at range.
Mate, can you please spend a tiny bit longer composing your posts so they actually make sense and have vaguely legible words? I don't care if some people make a few spelling errors or typos, but... Wow I can barely interpret what you are trying to say. Phoenix Guard have 4+ ward saves, not 3+.
