Anyone know any alternatives for the technical paints like stirland mud that are cheaper than what GW sells? They're great for creating texture on bases and such so it actually resembles mud/earth/rock/etc.

I've tried just throwing layers of sand at a base with some glue randomly put down, and using various other materials like cork and such. But nothing creates anything that looks quite as natural.

So anyone have any suggestions?

What exactly is the filler he uses? It's always a pain to figure out how to translate the names for those things so I can actually find it locally.

I don't know, but I made Lustrian Undergrowth and I used a generic wet drywall compound, sand, and a dark green generic paint.

I think we call that compound spackle in the US. I bought a container at Walmart for under $5.

I use Vallejo Texture Paste, it is a lot more cost-effective than GWs texture paints.

Here is also the first video showing up on youtube for a review on them:

Note: There are other brands that sell Texture Paste as well, but I have not tried those.
I also use Vallejo texture paint. its much better than GW.

@Padre Spackle has a tendency to flake and crack under the slightest pressure, so i tend not to use it now.

That's fair. Mine dried fairly hard, so I'm content at this point. If I decide to make another, I may use green stuff over a cardboard or foam core. We'll see.
