Tip 1: Don't show her the Big Red (rule)Book. That thing is enormous, and still scares me. If you can get your hands on the pocket sized version, do it.

A couple things that have worked for me:

Don't worry too much on being exactly right when it comes to stats and charts. This is where "being in the ballpark" works great - pick a static number and stay with it for all practical purposes. Its not the number or stats that will be remembered, but the fun and strategy involved. Having to stop and look up rules, charts, and other things can be a put off for someone trying to learn the mechanics of the game. Several friends of mine told me that if I showed them me always referencing the rules and charts when I first showed them they would most likely not be much interested initially.

Basically, show basic movements, identify different types of units (and show her some pics of the different types of armies if you that available.. or if you know a type she may be interested in, show her those. Painted magazine/book models tend to get that "oooh" factor in), get a flair for a bit of magic, and roll some dice! More importantly, don't look or feel stressed while showing if you can help it. People have a tendency to pick up on that sort of thing. A smile while teaching can go a long ways.

Good luck and glad that your spouse has interest! Mine has absolutely none. Zero, whatsoever. :depressed:

I agree with Lord Cedric. Stick with the basics. Movement, charging, shooting, combat. Maybe allow magic. Keep it small, like 400 pts or less. Stick to the summary sheet in the back of the book and try not to look anything up.

Try not to get into things like Armor Save modifiers, To Hit modifiers, or Steadfast. Ignore most of the special rules like fear, poison, quick to fire, etc. Work up to including all that stuff. The VC special rules can be confusing too, so pick and choose those. You don't want to scare her away with all the things she has to remember.
