Any thoughts on upgrading to an Ancient Krox? 20pts gets you another S6 attack. Other than that, though I don't see much.

Also, can you group an Ancient Krox with Skinks?

No. The upgrade is for Kroxigors only.

    Ok, thanks for the clarification.

Otherwise, is the upgrade really worth the points? Granted, on a charge that extra attack is kind of nice, but you can buy 4 skinks for that.

This is purely my personal opinion and take it with a grain of salt as I have never used ranked skinks, much less with Kroxigors mixed in:

I do not like ranked skinks at all. In a world with static combat resolution they, frankly, suck. T2, WS2, 6+ save... they are going to die in droves. I have had Skink Skirmishers get into Close Combat and it is about the same as it would be for ranked Skink, minus the shield. They lose combat, their Leadership sucks and they bolt. Sure, you could put 20 out there, add a banner and count on the Kroxigors doing some attacks back and making a difference but that leads to other problems.

If they get crushed anyway, (anything with two attacks plus frenzy and a halberd would butcher them) you are looking at the cost of the unit, plus 100 Victory points for the banner. Just bad news.

Ideally, one would use them as a flanking unit. They are great for that. Unfortunately they are just a little hard to maneuver since they cannot perform a turn and must wheel. That eats a lot of that nice movement they have and can lead to taking charges you don't want to, which, again, is bad news for the unit.

Personally I think the risks outweigh the potential benefits. 190 points for 16 Skinks and two Kroxigors. For 15 points more you can have 5 Cold One Cavalry with a musician and Standard Bearer. Comparing the two you have 6 potential S3 attacks + 6 S6 attacks. Realistically you cannot count on the front rank being there after a round of CC so we can disregard most if not all of the S3 attacks. 5 CoC will do 15 S4 attacks (10 turn into S5 attacks on the charge!), have a 2+ save, move faster and better than the Skrox unit and are much more safe if they do take a charge. They also have a banner. Obviously, both units are supposed to be used for flank and rear charges anyway. Sure, Stupidity can happen now and again, but you only have to roll 8 or less on three dice. Not a guarantee, but a safe bet most times.

Anyhow, that's just how I see it and again, this is purely an "on paper" opinion as I ave never used Skrox units. For all I know they could be the bees knees and I am missing out. But, I doubt it. ;)
