Hi, I'm new to Lizardmen and not wildly experienced at Warhammer Fantasy. I'm working on a 1000pt list and like the idea of Skink Chief with Blowpipe, the Venom Of The Firefly Frog and it's BS 5 poisoned re-rolls. It would attach to Skink skirmishers. However as this is such a low-cost list it might end up being the general. Is this an insane idea? Is the unit just way too squishy be the general?
He's ok in low point games, or if he's on a stegadon... don't forget he can take the steg helmet to increase his LD and armor.
well, he probably is best with the sacred stegadon helm to be teh general so he is as usfull as a saurus general. otherwise i suggest giving him a terradon and the staff of the lost sun for some S5 shots. you're probably best off with a saurus general and a skink BSB with the above equipment. it gives you a nice skink chief that gets you rerolls on cold blooded break tests and your army has the Ld of the scar vet all arround. blowpipes aren't that strong even with the rerolls. they are best used to kill tough things with little to no armor saves (ogres, giants, monsters in gneral, fast cav) and for that you have your basic skirmishers. you can field X skirmishers for the point cost of the chief and they will probably do a better job against those targets
The Helm is a nice item but way too expensive IMHO for 1000 pts? I think perhaps I need to strip out a couple of Saurus + a COC and get a Scar vet to handle the roll.
I would recommend against the skink chief unless he's on a stegadon. I ran one once with the dagger of sotek (killing blow and causes fear in Skaven) because I was trying to show that even the "weakest" options in our list can still do well. ... and he really didn't. Skink chief + one magic item ~ Scarvet I'd go for the Scarvet, even naked he is better (unless you really dig a magic item... even then, I'd give it to the scarvet over a chief.)
It might work a little better with the long range setup you have... But remember you want the general within 12" of as much of the army as possible, and that won't happen if he is off with the skirmishers. He is fairly safe from death though. The problem with going for a combat one is, of course, once he gets to combat if he doesn't kill his targets then he dies really really easy. For a 1k game if you have a skink heavy lis, I say go for it and see how it goes. I would definitely say no for anything bigger though.
