the horned one is a magic item, and hence can be destroyed by "vaul's unmaking" doesn't sound good to me.

It was a stupid idea for GW to make it a magic item instead of a mount option for heroes, absolutely not worth it IMO. I can find many better uses for my magic point allowances than a mount. Leave the horned one at home.

As to Vaul's, an interesting idea... Vaul's makes the magic weapon/item become its mundane version, so a magic great weapon becomes a normal great weapon etc. So Vaul's turns a horned one into a normal cold one I believe.

The only way I could justify a horned one is if it gets magic attacks (it is a magic item afterall), then in some cases against ethereal it might be good. But the rider is still going to do a lot more than the mount anyway so even then its a stretch to consider it.

For a skink cloak of feathers would definately be better. I think the horned one would only be taken as a points filler. It's pretty much worthless because, and correct me if I'm wrong, if it's put in with a cold one cavalry. If the cold ones go stupid then the horned one is wasted. And besides, it's not like a great cold one. It's M and I is increased by 1. The only bonus is that it's not stupid. 35 points for that? Totally not worth it.

diablarist, it's really up to you. If I was forced to use one, he'd have to be a pretty sturdy Hero, and even then you only get 15 more points to spend on magic items. I think I'll stay with a stupid cold one :D

Yeah you are right, if you put it in a unit of cold ones then they can still go stupid and halt the horned one anyway...

I can't see how you would possibly need a points filler, especially not one as silly as the horned one. If you cannot find 35 points worth of useful magic items to take on a character, then you don't need that character.

You could give it to a Skeenk Chief, and then he could be stubborn iwth the horn of kygor Nearby! :jawdrop:
(note that I don't particularly care for the horn of Kygor, but it is a funny item nonetheless)

M8 seems like an interesting prospect, but you are still looking at only one character, who won't be very well armed with so many points in the horned one. I guess you could put one with a skink chief to give him that extra movement and armor save... but why not just put him on a terradon in that case?

Yeah, I can't really think of a good reason, but maybe GW will come out with a cool horned one model.

I bought the inxi-huinchi riders back in the 5th edition (dogs of war) and Inxi huinchi himself rides a horned one. As for modeling and converting, you could always try to put the head of the horned one on a cold one..

Back on topick I would just join in the voices against the magic item. It sure should have been made a mount option rather than a magical item.

This is a really good idea. Unfortunately, I'd put money on GW deciding that this is not the case.
To me, it's an interesting option to model, but not much else.
