for units of 17-20 saurus are they really needed? also in TG too. TG i doubt it as even if they lose combat becaue of it theyre stubborn with cold blood so very unlikely to flee.
TG need it less I would say, but there is nothing worse than fighting a fear causing unit like undead, drawing combat, and them pulling a musician to see you off unless you can roll snake eyes... Really, the point of musicians is to negate the opponent's musician more than anything. Though if you do find yourself fleeing, the +1 to the roll can be very handy as well. And lets face it, they don't really cost a lot of points. I do tend to find that musicians are the first things to go in my lists if I need to shave off a few points, but do it sparingly. I tend to drop musicians from my undead armies, since those guys never flee anyway and who cares if one dies rather than it being a draw, but for living armies they are usually worth keeping.
I love musicians... I find them to be useful in the most different kinds of units. A little throwaway unit doesn't need a standard (easy VP for enemy) nor a champion... but if you plan on baiting and fleeing a lot, you can help make sure you rally by taking a musician. The +1 to rally is a bigger boost for lizardmen than other armies for similar cost. Also when running your little unit into other little units... you may even wind up with a draw, and typically your opponent will neglect to put a musician in his support units! Dirt cheap as well, for what you get.
hmmm, suppose I might ponder tossing musicians in my 5 man Cold one Rider packs. Pity skink skirmishers can't get 'em =D
