So I'm pretty sure we all have seen Avatar (or atleast heard of it) and I've seen a few posts on it, mostly because we lizardmen collectors have the terradons.
They are very similar to the mountain banshees or Ikrans as the Na'vi calls them and after watching the movie for the 3rd time I thought:" I need to paint my terradons like the Ikrans (and Toruk).
I am going for painting all the regular terradons like the Ikrans and

More picture of it will follow when I find or buy batteries for the camera
Some of the pictures to inspire me.

I'd love to see them all done. I have always disliked the way GW has the current models painted.

When you post the finished ones try to get a better background so we can better admire your work, perhaps white.

    Wow, thats wonderful!

Can you give us some insight of how you did this? I am planning to do my Terries in the same fashion, and a few hints could come in handy!

    Thanks

Haha, that's awesome! I was kicking myself after the movie came out because I had my army all being painted a Kommando Khaki/Orchide shade combo instead of the GW colors. That would be a pretty awesome army to see.

The idea for my oldblood was going to be a conversion using the carnosaur kit and the ringwraith kit they just came out with for Lord of the Rings. The flyer would be green stuffed to look like Toruk and the old blood would be blue.

Either way, great models. Vallejo has some great colors if you wanted to try to get those terradons lighter.

Ok so here are some more pictures with a much better background. As you can see I did add the little "chin fin".

    1001316k.jpg

    1001312a.jpg

This is how I did it. I started with making some green stuff and shaping it like a shark fin and then put it on the bottom part of the face. After base coated with a chaos black I began with the upper part of it (all that can be seen from the top, except the head) and gave it a complete layer of hawk turquoise. Then I made a 50/50 mixture of hawk turquoise and snot green and hard drybrushed it on the hawk turquoise and on the "bone" part on the inner part of the wings and also on the legs. I also drybrushed the top part of the head with this color.
Then really fast mixed up a bit skull white into the 50/50 mix and softly drybrushed it on the upper parts again. Next I painted the inner parts of the wings, the chest, the bottom part of the face and neck (creating one big area), the claws and the bottom part of the tail with a bleached bone. Added all the small details as the scab red eyes and the fin and the tongue liche purple. Washed the whole model with devlan mud.
The pattern on the wings was simple small black strips going from the middle of the body and out. Then for the yellow part I thinned some sunburst yellow in water and painted decent long brush stripes from the middle and out. Then again I washed it in devlan mud and that's it. Phew that was long...

Have you tried wet blending? Its not an easy technique, but I think it would really lend itself to what you are trying to achieve. Try applying some yellow watered down a bit to the yellow areas, then clean your brush and while the paint is still wet (with the brush only damp, not dripping) lightly flick the brush across the yellow area into the red. It might take a few tries to get the right consistency; not enough water and it dries too fast, too much water and the paint will just spread through all the area evenly anyway.. So the reason I said try with yellow is no matter what you should still be able to see some of the red underneath.

    Very nice work suppe!!

As strewart said, wet blending would work beautifully on this model! And in any case, you should try thinning the paint a little bit with water in order to get a smoother finish :)

I think I'll copy your idea if you don't mind :)

To Skrox: If I were you I would buy them then figure out how to paint them as you can still play with unpainted :D
