After an 8 year absence from WHFB i've decided to get back into the hobby and pick up my favorite army, Lizardmen....only one problem....it appears that after years of being away from my parents house my armies have gone "missing"...so back to square one, apparently everything has changed since i've been gone(both with lizardmen in general and with WHFB). So to start i have: 1 Saurus Scar-vet/Oldblood 1 skink priest 1 box of Saurus Warriors(modelled w/ hw's and shields for ward save in combat) 1 box of Skinks un-assembled(will explain later) i will then proceed to pick up 1 battalion box, giving me a total of: 1 Saurus Scar-vet 1 skink priest 1 unit of 16 Saurus warriors(4x4 w/ HW) 1 unit of 20 Saurus warriors(5x4...now here comes the questions) should i give them spears for 3 ranks worth of attacks? a potential 15x2=30 attacks? 36 skinks since i've been gone it has come to my attention that skinks can now rank and file(coherts) so the question is how should i model them...im thinking of one Skrox unit so how many should have javelins and shields to make a survivable Skrox unit and how many should i leave for skirmishers? 8 CoC(i like the models and plan on play-testing them to see how they do) 10 temple guard(i dont plan on running a slann...i know crazy, right? but can they be fielded on their on?) so now i leave the rest up to you...if you managed to read through it all that is. what else should i get to make a competive army? im open to any and all C&C
just for clarification on my above post, point limits are of no concern right now. i can adjust the list depending on the limit and opponent. what i mainly want to know is what models i should get in addition to what i have, what formations are best and what equipment they should have before i assemble them and there is no turning back here's a couple of examples: at higher point games could i take a lord on carnosaur? or would he just go splat? how many stegs do i need and what should they have? giant bow or engine? and just how bad are razordons? Thanks, Forsak3n_Oldblood
Well, it is actually very funny... You and I have pretty much the same exact models so far I don't have a Scar Vet/Oldblood but I did get a Stegadon a little while back on my birthday and my wife helped me along with a pair of Salamanders Well, everything really depends on how you field your army. Ranked Skinks with a Kroxigor or two in the unit can be very effective if played right. I didn't have too much luck with them but that doesn't mean that they arn't useable! Saurus and the equipment they take is a matter of personal opinion. I like the hand weapon and shield for the parry save but adding shields in makes them have a little more 'punch.' I would tend to have a smaller unit have the hand weapons and shield and give them a smaller frontage as they are more of an anvil type unit (not too much different but the 6+ ward gives them a slight advantage in survival over the spear Saurus) where as a large block of Saurus gives you a larger frontage where you can take advantage of spears to get a few more spear support attacks. If you have a friend or two that play the game see if you can just model your Saurus with the bodies and shields only and maybe play-test with hand weapons and spears to see which ones you like more. I'm lucky enough to have a brother who plays and when our wives agree we get to test out all sorts of things How many Stegadons is up to you. Remember that even though a cannonball can kill them quick, opponents still tend to complain if you have too many. I am only planning on taking one in my tournament army. And the Carnosaur is a viable mount for your Lord. If you protect them right he will definitely earn his points back. But you have to protect him right He has an OK armour save and an OK toughness but not enough to withstand too much long ranged punishment. I am planning on running a Carno Lord in my tournament army as well. Just find out how you want your army to 'play out.' If its a fast attack army then find the models that will suit your needs.
I've actually been thinking of using the larger block w/ spears and the smaller one with HW's, but that is a great idea to try and find someone to playtest the models without their weapons arms to see which one i like better. I was thinking in 2k to 3k point games to eventually have a Carnosaur lord with 2 Stegs, giving my opponent 3 large and potentially dangerous targets, on top of everything else i have on the field. from what i've heard my searching through the forums i definitly need a steg and a couple sally's. apparently razordons arent to great(those models werent around back in my day), and krox are hit and miss. i definitly am going to be doing quiet a few playtests with what i have now and see how a Slann-less build will work thanks
This is from my experence with 8th ed. This is to be considered and not to be taken as a rule: I would highly suggest you stay away from the battalion because your paying in part for the cold ones. Cav are next to useless in this edition as they are high priced, and rarely able to break ranks unless you take a lot of them (brits are the exception with ranks of 3). If you charge in the front, your opponent will likely go first and kill a bunch. If you go in the flank, your likely to loose your rank bonus and your opponent will be not break. From someone who loves cav and has lots of cav models, stay away from cav. The above is just my opinion. I suggest you proxy them before you buy em to see what you think. P.S. Also please stay away from e-bay. As I'm collecting my army on there I don't need extra compatition (j/k)
staying away from CoC seems to be the feeling i've gotten from cruising around the forums. and due to the fact im attempting a Slann-less build i have no need from TG. im better off buying 2 additional boxes of warriors, bulking my warriors out to 48(have 16 already) plus the 24 skinks i already have, and getting a steg. that should put me only $11 over the cost of the battalion and is better for my goal. p.s. dont worry, i havent found anything i like on ebay....yet
