Ok so i'm kinda confused by this item. It says in the army book "that character must immediately take a toughness test". does that mean your using the strength of the user and the toughness of whatever your using it on? Thanks in advance! thegilifeguard
As with any characteristic test, they roll a D6 and try to meet or roll under their score. Leadership tests are the one exception to this, as they roll 2d6 (or 3d6 drop 1 in our case!), but it is basically the same.
I was giving leadership tests as the common example for characteristic tests. Toughness test is as follows: Target of the test rolls a D6 If the roll is equal to or under the target's toughness, the test is passed. If the roll is OVER the toughness stat, the test is failed. See the last couple sections of page 5 of the rulebook.
I ran it against a HE army a few weeks ago. I gained 1 wound on the character that I used it on. In my opinion, it was worth it. I plan on using it again this Sunday. 2-3 bad rolls on a character and it is done.
Even if their toughness is 6 or higher, they'll always fail the test on the roll of a "6". Thus there's always a chance for it to work.
I used to run this for a long time in my southlands army list (6th edition) and I still use it occasionally... It is very random and obviously you can't depend on it, but used as a last reort it can be a nasty surprise and it has often given me those much needed extra victory points in the last turn of the game. IMO, if you can spare the points, you should try it out
Unfortunately I believe they're both enchanted items - so you can't take them both on the same character. However, because its an enchanted item - you can hide it on a revered guardian in a TG unit if you want. I've tried bringing it to low point games (sub1000) - haven't had luck with it actually killing anything yet, but it has burned a scroll before because I managed to save it until the opponent's dispel dice were all gone and they didn't want to risk their sorceress to the roll of the dice.
All I can say: Use it. In few 2000pts games I managed to give at least one wound and once there was also a kill But those games were against elves or empire, it means T3 (50% chances). I am not sure about effectivity against higher T's. Giving it to the TG champion is also a good idea, but you probably have to use it sooner.
I tend to have it in my list whenever I run Temple guard. Giving it to the Revered Guardian Strewart if points permit. I don't run a Slann in my list so I'm free to do whatever I want with the Temple Guard when I've used the item. But I advice you to have something to free up your opponent of those very heavy dispel dice! They won't risk having their own sorcerers sniped if they can. Cheers!
