This weekend at a tournament I ran a skink chief on a stegadon inside a skink krox mixed unit. I was greatly assailed by rules quotations mentioning the stegadon as a monstrous mount and other quotes stating that monstrous mounts cannot be inside units. Yet I got the idea from another forum and continuously see people doing similar stuff.

Now that I'm home I cannot find anywhere in the small, skulls pass, rule book where it says a monstrous mount cannot be in a unit. Nor can I find anything saying it can. Can someone point me to a page number in either the main rule book or the lizardman rule book solving this issue?

    Interesting question...

pg 58 of the rule book states "Monsters always fight individually; they can never join other models to form a unit, except when they are ridden by a character."

As long as there isn't another more specific provision which applies to the stegadon I would interepret this in the following manner: a steg cannot join a unit, but if it is the mount of a priest/chief, then it can. Bear in mind however that look out sir obviously doesn't apply.

Yeah Aranigej has the quote. A monster on its own cannot join a unit, but a monstrous mount for a hero can. I am surprised this was not known at the tournie, in 6th edition it wasn't allowed and it was one of the 'big' changes going to 7th ed, along with horse/cold one etc mounted heroes being able to completely hide inside big units.

So you can if it is a character mount, but not if it is a special/rare choice. In the same way krox can only be inside skink units if they were bought as an upgrade to the skinks, you can't buy a unit of krox as a special choice then choose to put them in any skinks whenever you like.

If you read my Evolution of an Army Update you can see the massive downsides to having a steg in a Skink unit.

1: You can Panic the unit of Skinks and cause the Steg to run (He is immune to Psych but the unit he has joined is not)

3: You can Beat the Unit in Combat and the steg wont get a stubborn Check. (He is Stubborn the Unit is not he doesnt pass stubborn to the unit)

4: He can still be targeted and singled out by shooting due to being a large target.

5: Is far less manuvreble and a waste of a great flanker.

But on the upside your Skink unit is immune to terror

    Cheers Sart

Probably because stubborn is the exception rather than the rule. Common sense wise you would think it would work like Immune to Psych, where the unit doesn't benefit. Stubborn is weird that way, but it does indeed transfer to the unit.

Yeah stubborn does transfer only because the steg is actually a monstrous mount with a hero on top, heroes can transfer their stubborn to the unit and vice versa.

But overall, it is rather a poor move anyway to put a steg in a unit..

I have to disagree. I live by 2 EotG in Suarus units. Both the EotG and the Suarus unit benefits. The EotG gets protection from challenges and static CR, the Saurus get full rank bonuses and immunity to Terror.

P.S. when a stubborn character joins a unit, the unit can of course use the characters Ld, which in this case is 6. So an EotG joined to a Saurus unit has Ld8 and can never go below Ld6 if beaten in CC.

yeah they are. Go read the armybook, it says both on the stegadon page and the army list pages in the back. The book tells you that they're stubborn 3 times in total I think.

    :D

Your opponent needs to also read the rules.. stubborn stegadons is pretty much common knowledge.

yes a steg in the unit makes the unit stubburn, read under mounts and characters, if the mount is stubburn it makes the character stubburn, then the character in turn confers it to the unit.

I run an all skink army and trust me this is crucial. A skink champion in a skink krok unit is a waste of points till u add a steg with character there.

Normally I ownly do this when I see I can't get the charge off and I need to stop a break through, add the steg to the skink block and case a giant road block and then flank.

However I do run 3 stegs, so i have the versitility, but I am called a chesse ball for having 3 stegs in an all skink army ffs, I'm skinks!

    no lord choices

    1 skink priest with engine

1 chief w/ war spear on ancient

1 chief bsb on reg steg

Currently the list is 14 wins 1 loss

got 12 out of 25 in last tourney for comp. The joke about that is that I won best sport, so clearly my list was not that hard

at 2k you do not choose a lord and get nailed on comp that is bogus!!

3 Steg mounts, 1 of each variety sound perfectly legitimate to me!

Since when does the Psycology transfer to the unit??
If you stick a stubborn character in a unit the stubborn does not transfer it never has and it never will just because its a monstrous mount doesnt change this....

The only thing that transfers to the unit is terror and fear making them immune to that but that is it.
Feel free to qoute the rule and corresponding page tho. :shifty:

The mount doesnt make the character Stubborn in combat the Mount is stubborn but can Use the Riders leadership. that same rule doesnt apply to a unit it only applies to the rider.

when it is in a unit and has lost combat the Unit is taking the test not the character... but as the rul states you can use the characters leadership or not (in the EOTG case in saurus you would use the leadership of the saurus but both rolls will be modified)
